Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To prepare specialists in social work having great professional and general cultural competence who, by integrating interdisciplinary knowledge and intercultural experience, will be able to evaluate the needs of a person, group and society in a complex manner and to provide social rehabilitation services following the principles of professional ethics and reflectively assessing own professional activities.

Generic competencies developed:
Ability critically assess the application of interdisciplinary knowledge in multicultural practice of social work and social rehabilitation, apply them in research and practice of social work and rehabilitation. Ability to carry out applied research which are focused on links between the theory of social work and practical activities as well as on psychosocial needs of multicultural society and their fulfilment, creatively interpret findings of applied research in professional activities and in the context of social policy. Ability reasonably communicate in native and foreign languages with professionals of the field and in multicultural environments by properly positioning the social work profession.
Subject specific competencies developed:
Ability to recognize and comprehensively assess powers of a person, group and society as well as the need of social assistance and rehabilitation services. Ability to develop plans, social programmes and projects for fulfilment of clients' social needs by mobilizing personal, group, society resources and empowering them for self-help and changes in life quality. Ability to organise and provide empowering social assistance for individuals, groups, communities in the context of interinstitutional cooperation. Ability critically assess quality of social assistance services and initiate an improvement of social assistance following the principles of social justice and responsibility, human rights, values and ethics of social work. Ability to coordinate activities of social assistance and cooperate in an interdisciplinary team by taking social responsibility and initiating assistance which empowers and meets the needs of individuals in a multicultural environment. Ability to demonstrate tolerance and respect for social variety in a multicultural context following the values of social work and ethical requirements. Ability reflectively assess own and colleagues’ professional practice, analyse professional and personal development in the context of life-long learning.
Learning outcomes:
The aim of the study program Social Work and Social Rehabilitation is to educate specialists with high professional and cultural competencies who, by integrating the acquired interdisciplinary knowledge and intercultural experience, will be able to comprehensively evaluate social needs of an individual, or a group of people, or a community, and provide adequate social assistance as well as various social rehabilitation services; having completed this study program, a Bachelor Degree in Social Work is awarded and the qualification of a social worker is granted.
Activities of teaching and learning:
The Programme combines teaching and study methods, traditional (lecture, seminar) and innovative forms of studies (distance learning in Moodle environment/elements of distance learning in Moodle environment, service learning, academic mobility, etc.). To develop students’ general and special abilities, variety of methods is applied. The following teaching methods are employed in lectures: lecturing, talk, illustration, demonstration-observation; active learning methods prevail in seminars: cooperative learning, discussion, brainstorming, mind mapping, simulation, case study (method of case simulation, application, and analysis), modelling (projecting); students develop individual and group (team) projects applying methods of problem solving and project management; in some course units, methods of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) are applied.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The system of ten grades and accumulative evaluation system are applied. The assessment methods depend on the subject specificity and outcomes sought. In order to check the students’ knowledge and comprehension, interim colloquiums, writing a short paper, giving oral presentations, writing an essay are employed, as well as an examination in the form of an individual survey in writing, tests of open and closed questions, and the creation of concept maps. Students’ special skills are assessed when such tasks as written work, unconventional task (e.g. case analysis), and defense of the project or research framework is completed; such other tasks of subjects and placements as course papers integrated into the subjects, reports on practice placements are also included. The method of giving feedback and reflections on practice (self-assessment, colleagues’ assessment, etc.) employed with the aim to assess and encourage students to evaluate their individual and social skills.
Framework:
Study subjects (modules), practical training:
The Programme consists of three parts: 1) 15 credits for general subjects of university studies; 2) 166/162 credits for subjects in the Social work study field (with practices and final thesis); 3) 59/63 credits for subjects in other fields. These subjects are integrally related to the Programme learning outcomes, and they substantiate an interdisciplinary character of studies. 16 credits of the Programme volume are allocated for practical workplacements. The studies include 4 practices integrated into the content of course units (8 credits); after finishing a part of the theoretical course, students carry out assignments of the course unit at the places of practice. 28 credits in the joint study programme are for the academic mobility. The academic mobility plan focuses on integration of intercultural experience into the professional field of social work in terms of social rehabilitation services. 18 credits are for the Bachelor thesis, students will collect research data in Lithuania and Latvia, perform comparative data analysis.

Study program includes 26 credits alternative selective subjects according to the content of study field: 1) Latvian Language / Russian Language, 2) Health Psychology / Social Adaptation, 3) Art Therapy / Psychodrama, 4) Hippotherapy / Alternative Therapy in Social Work, 5) Sociology of Deviations / Management of Aggression, 6) Caritative Social Work / Social Work with Deviant Personalities, 7) Teamwork in Social Work Practice / Professional Self-Education.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
The joint international study programme is orientated towards integration of social rehabilitation and intercultural experience (in terms of provision of social rehabilitation services) into the field of social work, as well students prepared to work as a social worker who are capable to provide social rehabilitation services.

Graduates can work as social work specialists at different level institutions providing social services, such as non-governmental organizations, local communities, municipality or regional institutions.

Graduates will be able to continue studies in the social work or Master’s degree studies related with this area in Lithuanian or foreign high schools.
