Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To train a public health specialist who is able to make a full assessment of the risk factors of lifestyle and chronic diseases on a public and personal level, to develop a plan of lifestyle correction, health promotion and disease prevention, to motivate and to enable individuals to make changes and to evaluate its effectiveness.
Learning outcomes:
1. Will have the latest knowledges of biomedical, social and other sciences which will be needed for the work of specialist in public health also will be able to use them explaining the lifestyle-related health problems and health issues
2. Students will be able to see health problems on public and personal level, to apply principles and methods of scientific work, to collect data by using information systems, databases, will use empirical research methods to analyze and critically evaluate the results, provide solutions, to follow the ethical principles of research.
3. Will be able to analyze and interpret the health indicators of population, to organize and to implement health monitoring and evaluation on individual and population level.
4. Will be able to identify and assess the environmental, lifestyle, psychosocial and biological health risk factors; will have a holistically approach to their management.
5.Will be able to define the needs and possibilities of the primary, secondary and tertiary disease prevention; implement interventions, based on disease prevention programs, environment and lifestyle change projects; implement them and evaluate their effectiveness;
6. Will know ground priorities of the health policy, strategic planning, principles of the health promotion, the management of the health system and evaluation of it, also will know the modern health impact assessment methods and how to promote and implement in practice the principles of modern healthy lifestyle for the society.
7. Will be able to evaluate the risk of harmful habits and addictions, unhealthy nutrition, lack of physical activity and other health risk factors; will have an ability to increase personal motivation to change behavior, to create a plan of the personal behavioral correction and to assess changes of behavior;
8. Will know how to consult individuals about healthy lifestyle (nutrition (diet), physical activity, harmful habits and stress control) on matters within their competences, according to the need in collaboration with health care professionals;
9. Will have an ability to work as a team member with a multidisciplinary public health and personal health care specialists, in professional and interdisciplinary environment will be able to discuss on relevant professional issues.
10. Will be able to demonstrate analytical skills, in popular and attractive way to present scientific knowledges to the public, will base their opinion on the latest scientific knowledge.
11. Will be able to continue to study, to learn lifelong by themselves, to choose a course of a personal development, to use this knowledges in practice.
12. Will have a critical and self-critical way of thinking, they will be creative, empathetic, and will be able to be honest and to follow the ethical obligations.
13. Will be able to discern an interdisciplinary perspective, will provide the problem-solving skills of sciences methodology in interdisciplinary field on public, community and individual level, will be a able to criticize and propose new modern ideas, new technologies and models.
14. Will have an ability to base professional activities on the latest scientific data, to work in changing environment, to predict the changes and to plan combinations of the tasks solutions.
Activities of teaching and learning:
• student-centered activities – a seminar, retractable lecture, case studies, practice diary,
• activities that highlight the work of a teacher or guidance – lecture, tutorial, workshop, discussion, retractable lecture,
• the student's self-study – the terms learning, information retrieval, preparation of presentations,
• activity-based tasks – case analysis, text analysis, information retrieval, document analysis, individual or group task performance,
• activity-based research – analysis of scientific literature, research planning and execution,
• Learning in the workplace – practice, observation, practice diary
• activity-based group work – group work, discussion, simulation.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Oral examination, written examination, testing, preparation of individual task, preparation of group task, case-study, essay, group presentation, diary of practice, supervisor’s feedback of the practice, the preparation of the master theses (final work) and defense of it.

Scope of programme 90 ETCTS
 Study courses (48 ECTS): Nutrition and prevention of chronic disease; Mental health and lifestyle; Physical activity and health; Public health; Research work;
 Elective courses (4 ECTS) – The basics of Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, An integrated approach to healthy ageing and modern prevention of aging problems (aging related disorders), The opportunities of Behavioural Medicine;
 Practice – Lifestyle medicine: employment of theoretical knowledges to practice (8 ECTS);
 Research methodology and preparation of master thesis (final work) (30 ECTS)

Distinctive features of a study programme:
Lifestyle medicine graduate program is unique not only in Lithuania, but also in the context of studies of many other countries. This program is unique because it starts a new tradition of studies on public health which main aim is to prepare the professionals in the field of public health for becoming a junction link between medicine and public health. Students will be able to listen to lectures of the world's most famous nutrition experts and scientists, also they will gain practical knowledge of food preparation and skills how to teach people about physical activities and will gain skills for changing bad habits. A high quality of special theoretical and practical competences will be ensured by lectures and doctors from LSMU and USA who have a lot of experience in this work. Also the great practical training facilities will help to reach the goals of this programme. In order to ensure the needs of the working people and the needs of persons who are arriving from abroad, part of the program will be carried out in the manner of remote studies, however it will be ensured that all practical trainings will be carried out in a practical training centers.

The alumni of the nurse or physician study program will be prepared to work in the public and private health care institutions, in particular the primary health care institutions (will be a part of the family doctors team). Alumni who already has a doctor or a nurse diploma and are studying in this programme will be able to apply the knowledge in the relevant medical or nursing practice. The other graduates will be prepared to work in the public health system, in municipal offices of the public health, in various levels of personal and public health management structures, in the municipal offices of physicians, in the public health centres, in sport centres, in pre-school institutions, in social welfare institutions, in general-education, high and higher education schools, in the other places where the work may be associated with health problems and risky behaviour, diagnosis and prevention, the preparation of public health training programs, participation in health policy and the improvement of the health care system. The growing public interest in healthy lifestyle is facilitating such professionals to engage in private counselling practice.
Access to further study:
