Summary of the Profile

Objective(s) of a study programme:

The aim of the programme is to:
- educate highly qualified specialists who possess comparative knowledge and assessment skills of two languages and cultures — English and Lithuanian — and are able to apply the acquired knowledge in work in academic institutions and companies, and various international institutions and projects, especially those institutions and organizations that cooperate with European Union states
- educate highly qualified translators who possess knowledge of various principles of English and Lithuanian text production and editing and are able to use modern term-search and automated translation memory systems;
- train students for doctoral studies by expanding the range of academic and research topics so that these would include comparative linguistics, translation theory and cross-cultural analysis;

Learning outcomes:


Graduates of the Applied English Linguistics MA study programme will be able to:
- apply current concepts from translation theory and practice in analyzing and translating English and Lithuanian texts of different functional styles and genres;
- develop the skills needed to work with specialized texts (business, legal, academic, etc.), to choose appropriate translation strategies for dealing with such texts;
- use automated translation programmes and corpus lexicography;
- apply the current theories related to issues in literary translation;
- use their knowledge and understanding of intercultural research; develop the skills needed to analyze data for intercultural communication, especially as this is relevant in the context of European or transnational projects implemented for a specific company or institution;
- work as partners in common projects with various educational and other institutions, especially those which cooperate with the other European Union states;
- apply their acquired research skills in the spheres of translation, English and Lithuanian philology and cultural studies;
- continue their studies in English philology on the doctoral level.


Activities of teaching and learning:

Instruction methods: explanation, analysis, demonstration, discussion, tutoring, etc.
Learning methods: group work, team-building, self-study, seminar work, discussion, research activities, experiential learning, debate, projects, etc.

Methods of assessment of learning achievements:

The assessment of student knowledge is based on a cumulative grading system. Students have a mid-term exam (which comprises 30 per cent of the cumulative grade) and a final exam (50 per cent), as well as seminar and other individual work assessments such as tests, essays, presentations, etc. (20 per cent of the cumulative grade) during the semester. Evaluation rating scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 10 representing the highest level of achievement, 1-4 indicating fail. Exams are conducted in written form.
Framework:
Study subjects (modules)

The scope of the study programme is 120 ECTS. The programme consists of compulsory and optional courses. The compulsory subjects are: The Principles of Editing, Lexicology and Terminology, Innovative Strategies of Teaching Languages, Cross-Cultural Communication, Theory of Translation, Contrastive English-Lithuanian Stylistics, Consecutive Interpreting, Literary Translation and Computer-Aided Translation. The optional subjects are: Producing Electronic Glossaries, Special Course I, Translation 1: Language for Business, Translation 2 : Language for Law, Translation 3: Language for Science and Technology, Levels of Text Analysis and Translation, New English Teaching Theories, Language in Sociocultural Context, Text Linguistics, Theory and Practice of Corpus Linguistics and Second Foreign Language. During the first three semesters the students write three term papers (6 ECTS each) and during the fourth semester they write Master‘s paper (30 ECTS).

The programme prepares highly qualified specialists of English philology who have good knowledge and skills of translation theory and practice, are well acquanted with various aspects of intercultural communication and the most modern English teaching methodologies and are able to apply the knowlege in practice.
