Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
Main objective of animal welfare is to prepare veterinarian that has veterinarian specialist of animal welfare qualification, which would be able to apply his knowledge and his abilitys in practical work.
Learning outcomes:
1. Make specialist which would be honorable and honest with animals and their owners, hold on to veterinary medicine ethic norms, good veterinary medicine practice requirements, be critical to himself and others, be able to have compassion for animals and properly communicate with his owners, be creative and initiative.
2. After residency graduation be able to evaluate his competence in ensuring animal welfare and in her evaluation and in side specialty’s, and if necessary ask for help. Have knowledge in new assessment methods that are used in animal welfare, could work be himself, solve problems and make decisions, work and communicate in team with other specialists, could organize work and plan his work time.
3. Be able to: assess animal welfare legislation and the relationship between the system of the EU countries and Lithuania; analyze and adapt legislation to specific situations of specific infringements.
4. Be able to: assess the neglecting of the animal by external and internal body examination; to perform an investigation of injuries caused to the body of an animal; to identify injuries caused by mechanical, thermal, rifle, physical factors; to perform a poisoning test; to evaluate clinical, pathomorphological changes, to take material for toxicological research; perform differential diagnosis of the lesions found.
5. Be able to: organize and coordinate work during rescue; to act smoothly in cases requiring urgency and to discuss the situation with the owner, guardian of the animal; to select effective measures, including convenient, non-standard emergency aid; perform immediate therapeutic supportive actions; to advise the owner of the animal, to provide information how to ensure a safe environment for the animal, how to prevent the action of stressors, the occurrence of stressful situations.
6. Be able to: assess the physiological needs of the rescued animal, behavioral peculiarities; to ensure the smooth adaptation of the animal during the transitional period, at the time of release or by returning the animal to its normal living conditions.
7. Be able to: assess the layout, construction and equipment of slaughterhouses during the stunning and slaughter process; meat production technology; the qualifications of the staff, the health and welfare of the animals during unloading, the movement within the slaughterhouse, the progress and efficiency of the stunning and bleeding of the animals; to properly assess the sanitary quality of cattle carcasses.
8. Be able to: assess animal welfare violations during transport; choose the most appropriate mode of transport, the vehicle and other means of transport depending on the species, breed and age of the animal; identify animal welfare violations during loading and unloading from various vehicles; take further decisions when animal welfare violations are identified during transport.
9. Be able to: eliminate risk factors in the animal test facility that affect the quality of the test; identify a suffering or pain animal during the test using a scale (0-2); to apply methods of analgesia, anesthesia; apply biosecurity measures during the test and know the health monitoring and microbiological status of the test animals in accordance with the recommendations of Skanbur-bk; to complete applications for a permit for experimental animals in accordance with the requirements for a test project.
10. Be able to: assess water quality parameters that are important for animal welfare and able to interpret them; to determine the amounts of dissolved oxygen, ammonia, ammonium in water, water temperature, pH; compare indicators with physiological norms of aquatic animals and assess animal welfare.
11. Be able to: to assess the constitution and condition of pets; to apply diagnostic methods and, under various conditions, to assess the state of health of pet animals, the zoo hygienic parameters of the holding place and the correspondence of the feeding ration to age and physiological condition, behavior; take a socialization test; identify the causes of the changed behavior and advise on how to eliminate them; assess the welfare of pets in their various housing locations.
12. Be able to: assess changes in the behavior of farm animals and to use is as an indicator for assessing animal welfare; apply integrated farm welfare assessment systems; independently identify objective criteria for the welfare of farm animals and apply them to the assessment of animal welfare.
13. Be able to: perform diagnostic procedures, evaluation and interpretation of results for exotic and captive wild animals; explain to the animal owner the purpose and meaning of the animal welfare assessment; perform animal welfare assessment, elucidate and interpret signs of animal response; draw up an animal welfare plan; assess the risks to animal health and apply appropriate and rational measures to reduce those risks, apply infection control measures, assess the risks of occupational health to their own health and take measures to avoid those risks.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Variety of teaching and study methods: lectures, workshops, consultations, group discussions with others residents. Filling work day’s journal, rare cases presentation, and newest literature presentation.
Abilities and skills acquired while makings and evaluating animal welfare results, while working with resident manager, participating in discussions of animal welfare cases.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Attendance in lectures, activity in workshops and group discussions are marked in separate journal.
It’s required to report non les then 75 proc. all theoretical activity examined themes by annual lecture and workshop schedule.
Evaluation every weak in day’s work journal and assignments execution are confirmed by resident manager’s stamp.
Individual analysis of animal welfare cases and presentation evaluation of consultations as well as weekly meetings should be marked in day work journal and stamped by resident’s manager.
Review of resident work in resident’s base (written in free form or questioner) should be given by the workers in the base. They all are gathered and added to day’s work journal.
In end of each cycle or end of the cycle theme can be done by word or writing. Settlement can be given in test form with open and closed questions/assignments.
Animal welfare cases are presented for evaluation, some cycles can be settled by presenting cycle’s theme. Evaluating in a ten points scale.

Training of veterinarians who will have deeper competencies and better skills in ensuring and assessing animal welfare.

Access to professional activity:
1.Veterinarian – animal welfare specialist will be able to work for the State Food and Veterinary Service, in its territorial units for animal welfare control; initiate new proposals to improve animal welfare legislation.
2. In Municipalities of the cities and districts of the Republic of Lithuania they will be able to work at Environmental Protection Divisions and formulate animal welfare policies.
3.Veterinarian - animal welfare specialist could work in veterinary clinics, agricultural companies, private farms where they can perform clinical veterinary work and can be responsible for ensuring good animal welfare.
4.Veterinarian – animal welfare specialist not only will be able to work practical work, but as well as scientific – researching work and pedagogical work at LUHS VA.
Also, they can themselves can create a non-governmental animal welfare organizations and take their leadership.

Seeking for higher scientific qualification, veterinarian that has qualification of veterinarian – animal welfare specialist, opportunity may be given to study in PhD.
