General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The goal of the Medical and veterinary biochemistry study program is to prepare enterprising and entrepreneurial specialists capable of conducting biochemical research in the fields of laboratory diagnostics, environmental monitoring, analysis of food and biopharmaceutical raw materials and products.
Learning outcomes:
The Medical and veterinary biochemistry study program develops the knowledge of the researcher, biochemical problem-solving and practical work skills, provides the basics of scientific work, and prepares for master's studies. The study program includes the acquisition and development of both personal and professional knowledge. For those who have obtained a bachelor's degree in medical and veterinary biochemistry, the door is open to work as a biomedical technologist in the laboratories of health care institutions. This right is granted by the medical norm "Biomedical Technologist" approved by the Minister of Health of the Republic of Lithuania. Graduates of this program also work in various laboratories and private sector companies conducting research related to the diagnosis of human and animal diseases, environmental monitoring, control of food and agricultural products and raw materials.

Lectures, exercises, laboratory works, simulations, practice, independent work.

Study subjects (modules), practical training:
Year I - basic sciences: general biology and genetics; physics; general, inorganic, organic, bioorganic chemistry; advanced mathematics; human and laboratory animal anatomy.
Year II and III - basic and applied life sciences subjects: biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, general and molecular pathology, histology, molecular biology, biotechnology and genetic engineering, laboratory hematology and the basics of immunology, bioinformatics, diagnostic biochemistry.
Year IV – professional practice and final thesis.
Practice will be carried out in diagnostic laboratories of health care institutions, veterinary laboratories, food and raw material control laboratories and scientific laboratories in the field of biomedicine

Distinctive features of a study programme:
Study program Medical and veterinary biochemistry develops researcher erudition, biochemical problem solving and practical work skills, provides the basics of scientific work, prepares for master's studies. This is the only university study program in the direction of biochemistry, upon completion of which a bachelor's degree in life sciences and a professional qualification of a Biomedical Technologist are awarded, which provides the opportunity to work in the laboratories of health care institutions.
