Summary of the Profile

General Description: This residency program study of equine veterinary medicine is an aplied nature oriented program wich is focused on practical work and research work evolving capacity of one of the species and giving horse veterinarian qualification. The program is designed to develop creative, honest, initiative, self-confident equine veterinary medicine expert with the qualification as horse veterinarian professional, who are also interested in science innovations, capable to react and make decisions during quickly changing conditions, situations, with the ability work individually and in a team as well.

Objective(s) of a study programme:
Equine veterinary medicine is a non-degree university veterinary (H01) with directed studies, which designed to prepare professional - equine veterinarian, who will be capable to providing qualified services, ethically responsible, be able use various information technologies to find and share that professional knowledges, will interacts with colleagues and horse owners, apply different horses testing methods and deepened the knowledges about the horses contagious and non-contagious diseases, who will able to work independently and with team work as well and in the practical work will be capable apply the latest specialized knowledges about equine diseases and reproduction, constantly evolves in professional development, always spreading professional knowledges and practical experience to young colleagues.

Learning outcomes:
After horse veterinary medicine residency training program, equine veterinarian will know and be able:
1. Grounding about the human communication principles based on humanism and respects human freedom, horse welfare, veterinary legal standards and professional ethics. Will know legal framework requirements about the horse's welfare and protection.
2. Grounding about the horses contagious and non-contagious diseases etiology, pathogenesis, morphological changes, diagnostic, treatment and prevention. Will know about the common diseases which is dangerous for horses and people.
3. Ability critically and systematically analyze the veterinary practice work and research studies and apply the latest specialized knowledges of equine diseases, reproduction, and their keeping conditions.
4. Ability to use information technology for communi-cating, share, collect, manage and analyze the infor-mation.
5. Will be able to collect relevant veterinary information about the activities of horse and will perform X-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy and high-speed (express) re-search for diagnostic purposes.
6. Grounding about horse care and transportation requirements, equine diseases and disorders etiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment, will know the law and regulations about contagious diseases of horses.
7. Will be able to initiate, carry out and control planned activities in the group of people and not will be afraid to take responsibility for these activities.
8. As horse veterinarian will understand about the ethical responsibility for horse care and customer relations, with a special attention to the potential im-pact on the environment and society.
9. Will be able to take independent decisions and to assess their impact on the determined situation.
10. Will understand continuous professional develop-ment as need to realize the professional responsibility to put into practice and spreading the professional experience knowledges to young colleagues.
Activities of teaching and learning:
For these teaching activities will be applied informational training methods (rendered and reproduced), seminars, lectures, consultations, group discussions, educational films, cure clinic patients, participation in the treatment of ambulatory patients and advising the owners by the supervision cycle teacher or resident manager, a clinical case presentation, articles abstracting, self-study, daily activities Blogger refill.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
To see how a resident perform their duties and or is achieved their expected results, it will be implement out in the intermediate and final settlements. In the each cycle will be performed:
• Permanent evaluation of the resident work by the reviewing of the daily activities Blogger and tasks fulfilment, that work will be confirmed by the signature of the cycle teacher or resident manager and program coordinator's.
• Settlement for the theoretical part will be the oral or written at the end of the cycle. Assessment written in TEST form is with open and closed questions / tasks, the clinical situation (based on the theme of the cycle).
• Settlement for the practical part of the cycle will performed at the end: will be a clinical case study, the clinical examination plan and fulfillment, findings analysis, and formulation of the diagnosis, etc. (According to the theme of the cycle).
• During the cycle time acquired theoretical knowledge, practical skills and ability assessments are summed and recorded in the roster and in the resident study book.
• Presentation of the thesis will be held in the public session by the Qualifying commission.
Framework:
Study subjects (modules), practical training:
This program volume 120 ECTS and studies last 2 years. Practice studies occupy not less than 80 percent. of hours for cycle. Individual work will takes up at least 50 percent. for theoretical lectures for hours. The program consists from mandatory and optional cycles. Resident will study these programs mandatory cycles:

AVMR 01. Documented official registration by the legal regulations for the horse registration, breeding, kee-ping and maintenance.
AVMR 02. Horse sedation, general and local anaes-thesia.
AVMR 03. Equine infectious disease.
AVMR 04 Mares reproductive disorders and insemina-tion.
AVMR 05. Foal diseases.
AVMR 06. Equine internal medicine.
AVMR 07. Equine skin diseases.
AVMR 08. Equine lameness: diagnosis, treatment, pre-vention.
AVMR 09. Equine neurology and ophthalmology.
AVMR 10. Residency study's thesis preparation and presentation.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
The program is unique. There is no university or college, which has theoretical and practical skills in equine veterinary medicine field who is able to prepare equine veterinarian. After this study, equine veterinarian with acquired professional skills will provide good and effec-tives services for horses in Lithuania.
Access to professional activity or further study:
Access to professional activity: After graduation of residency in equine veterinary medicine studies and acquired in the program provided knowledge and skills, a resident will be able to work in accordance with their specialization – will implement practical activities in various institutions or will aspire for the scientific recognition and to continue their studies in various forms.
1. Work in the SFVS (State Food and Veterinary Service) network.
2. Work in agricultural advisory services.
3. Work in UAB „Lithuanian Horses Stud Farm“.
4. Work in the horses breeding farms.
5. To be able to set up their own clinic and engage in private practice.
6. To be employed as private veterinarian and work in veterinary clinics.
7. Implement the scientific-investigatory and/or educa-tional work or LUHS VA or in the other higher educa-tion institutions, in colleges and in research units.
Access to further study:
1. Mandatory continuous professional development (CPD).
2. Possibility join in the veterinary doctoral studies (PhD).
3. Studies in abroad universities for European diplomat status.
