Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
Prepare sign-language professional bachelors able to accurately translate between Lithuanian and Lithuanian sign language in communal translation situations; follow the professional ethics requirements; adapt to a situation, the client’s language and other circumstances.
Learning outcomes:
1.1 In preparation for interpreting services and while providing said services will apply information technologies.
1.2 Will use acquired knowledge in practice for making decisions and assessing performance.
1.3 Will name their own and their client's rights and responsibilities, as well as the relevant legal regulations in terms of working relationships.
1.4 Will describe interpreting theory’s principles, laws, phenomena.
1.5 Explain and properly use basic linguistic and sign linguistic terminology, analyze language at different levels, describe the differences between spoken language and sign language.
1.6 Will describe the deaf community’s historical features, values, cultural attitudes and specifics, will name the major deaf organizations and social policy features.
2.1 Will collect, organize, reflect on and interpret information.
2.2 Will analyze Lithuanian sign language texts in various aspects (vocabulary, grammar, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, etc.).
3.1 Will understand different Lithuanian sign language texts (varied in style, situation, speaker and so on).
3.2 Will effectively communicate using Lithuanian sign language in everyday personal and professional situations with different speakers.
3.3 Will follow professional ethical principles of communicating with clients and colleagues.
3.4 Will choose and apply translation methods, techniques and strategies according to the situation.
3.5 Will translate texts from Lithuanian to Lithuanian sign language and vice versa in everyday situations.
3.6 Will correctly interpret different spoken and written Lithuanian language texts of varying difficulty and style, situation, speaker and so on.
4.1 Will recognize cultural and linguistic diversity, tolerate and objectively assess each person.
4.2 Will appreciate linguistic and cultural identity as a basis for human identity.
4.3 Effective communication in various situations keeping the conversation’s purpose and recipient in mind, selecting the appropriate means of expression and rhetoric in accordance with the ethics of public communication.
5.1 Able to communicate in a foreign language (level B1) orally and in writing.
5.2 Critically evaluate and reflect on their professional activities realizing the importance of lifelong learning.
5.3 Will organize the learning process: choose strategies, set goals, effectively manage time.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Teaching and learning activities are oriented towards the development of students’ personal, social, research, and special competencies, through application of cognitive, knowledge conceptualization, action, individual learning empowering, investigation and self-control methods: interactive/involving lectures and workshops, creative tasks, seminars, individual and group work, conception mapping, learning by doing, reflective diaries, essay writing, experimental situational learning, problem and project learning, and other methods oriented towards development of practical problem analysis skills, discussion, case studies, independent work, reflections, what are based on positive professional self-development and self-awareness. The methods for students’ individual work, tasks, and hours for consulting are provided.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The assessment of learning outcomes is a part of studies’ process. The assessment is carried out through all semester and at the end of the course - during the exam session. The acquired knowledge and skills are assessed on a ten-point scale. The cumulative assessment is applied. The outcomes of the study programme subjects are assessed during the mid-term assignments (written surveys, tests, essays, control works, creative tasks, projects, experience diaries, portfolios, etc.). The grades from mid-term assignments are collected during the course within the semester and compound the part of the final grade from the course. Each subject studies conclude with the exam or with the assessment of student’s individual work (project, practice evaluation, etc.). The final assessment is allowed only if midterm assignments are complete. The final grade of the course is compounded from mid-term assignments grades and exam grades. Each part has its own percentage provided in the subject description.

Graduates will be able to work as Lithuanian sign language interpreters at sign language interpreting centres in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys, Lithuanian Association of the Deaf institutions and organizations, educational institutions and so on.
Access to further study:
After completing further adaptation studies graduates can study applied or general linguistics, as well as postgraduate studies in interpreting at various universities.
