General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The study programme English and Another Foreign Language (Swedish) aims at preparing competent specialists with good communication skills written and verbal in English and Swedish, who acquire a strong understanding of the key principles and research methods of linguistics, literature and culture and who will be able to apply various translation strategies, techniques and practice.
Learning outcomes:
The graduate of this study program will be able to:
Knowledge and comprehension:
• understand and analyse the structure of language taking into account different fields and aspects of linguistics, on the basis of various linguistic approaches.
• acquire (C1 level) English and (B2 level) Swedish communicative skills;
• apply the acquired awareness of both English and Swedish phonetics, morphology, syntax and lexis in practice, develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in both the languages.
• gain practical skills for translation of writing from English, Swedish into Lithuanian and vice versa; apply knowledge of the Lithuanian language in the editing of translated texts; analyse and translate texts, edit them by means of various dictionaries, scientific sources, electronic resources, and computer translation programs.
Competences for developing research:
• use acquired knowledge and gained skills of linguistics in practice, carry out linguistic research, write academic work by applying gained competences;
• adapt developed skills in the professional practice.
Special competences:
• reason, think critically and self-critically, construct logic arguments in a written and oral forms in the studied languages;
• apply creatively gained knowledge and flexibly respond to the cultural and social contexts in different situations;
• understand information technology fundamentals; work with texts of different formats in multilingual environments; prepare presentations;
• understand culture and traditions of Swedish-speaking and English-speaking countries;
• adopt acquired cultural knowledge in the international business environment.
Social competences:
• discuss and deal with linguistic problems in the training and professional activities with experts’ advice and Professional ethics;
• work effectively in team, coordinate individual activities with the activities of the team members.
Personal skills:
• reach set fair and reasonable goals;
• adopt appropriate solutions independently and evaluate achieved results; continuously improve knowledge, develop professional competences and personal skills;
Activities of teaching and learning:
Studies are organized by applying the following study forms: lectures, practical wok - exercises, individual, seminars, problem-solving teaching, discussions, tasks for information retrieval, case studies, a framework for reflection, individual and group work, concept mapping, analysis of the scientific literature, preparation for presentations, writing research paper, group and individual projects, individual and group consultations.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
All subjects are evaluated by applying cumulative assessment. Throughout the studies the following methods of assessment of learning achievements are applied: exams, projects, control works, tests, essay writing, presentations and reports, work and activities during seminars, case study, analysis of studied scientific material, home tasks, research work. Self-study includes: homework assignments, essay and report writing, reading and analysing scientific literature, academic research conducted writing course papers and BA thesis.

Study subjects (modules), practical training:
The study program covers the following blocks of modules, practice:
1) The subject block of LINGUISTICS is made of theoretical linguistic subject-modules (15 cr.): Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Germanic Philology, Introduction to Semantics and Pragmatics;
2) The subject block of LANGUAGE COMPETENCES subject-modules (125 cr.): Modern English (aspects: Phonetics, Morphology, Syntax, Lexis, Lexicology, English for Specific Purposes) and Modern Swedish (aspects: Phonetics, Morphology, Syntax, Lexis, Lexicology, Stylistics), English and Swedish Course paper, Professional Discourse Analysis: Business English and Swedish, Legal English and Swedish and English and Swedish for Finance;
3) The subject block of TRANSLATION, EDITING and COMPUTING STUDIES subject-modules (30 cr.): Translation Theory and Practice; Computer Software Tools for Text Stylistics and Editing; Translation Software and Translation Editing; Norms and Stylistics of the Lithuanian Language;
4) The subject block of LITERATURE module (10 cr.): Literature of the Scandinavian and English Speaking Countries;
5) The subject block of GENERIC SUBJECTS OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES (BUS) (15 cr.);
6) In the last semester students have Professional Practice (15 cr.) performed in state and private enterprises; the study programme ends with Bachelor Thesis in English (15 cr.).
7) Optional courses (15 cr.): Cultural History of the USA, History of Great Britain, Introduction to Psycholinguistics, Introduction to Cognitive Linguistics, Introduction to Sociolinguistics, History and culture of Scandinavia, Scandinavian Folklore and Mythological World.
Studies are student-focused with prevailing creative teaching and learning methods, which stimulate the active teaching-learning process.
Self-study tasks are used to help students to assimilate acquired knowledge.

Optional courses:
Students may choose optional generic subjects of university studies (BUS) from the given list of courses (Semester 2, Semester 5 and Semester 7); they also have the possibility to choose optional courses from the subject block of optional courses: Cultural History of the USA or History of Great Britain (Semester 3); either Introduction to Psycholinguistics or Introduction to Cognitive Linguistics or Introduction to Sociolinguistics (Semester 4); History and culture of Scandinavia or Scandinavian Folklore and Mythological World (Semester 6).
Distinctive features of a study programme:
The study programme English and Another Foreign Language (Swedish) is oriented to extend knowledge of English and Swedish and cultivate communicative competence in the two languages. The balanced system of subject-modules arranged throughout semesters ensures the equal development of communicative skills in the two languages. The orientation of the study program to the demand of labour market should be highlighted as well. Therefore, the study program includes subject-modules to develop communicative skills in English and Swedish business. Legal and Finance purposes.

The graduates of this study programme will become highly qualified specialists with the fundamental linguistic, intercultural, culture-historical knowledge, translation competences and the English and Swedish communication skills required for enterprises and institutions to guarantee their effective international communication with foreign business partners, to collect and analyse information in both the languages, to work with official documents in Lithuanian, English and Swedish, to translate documents and interpret, to participate in formal meetings, international events, projects, to represent the companies abroad, etc.
The graduates of this study programme will be able to work in the following institutions:
- in the departments of international relations in ministries and municipalities;
- in EU institutions;
- in international organisations;
- together with foreign business partners in business enterprises in Lithuania and abroad;
- in media companies;
- in tourism agencies;
- in cultural, education and information centres;
- in translation agencies; in publishing offices.
Access to further study:
The graduates may continue their studies in the Master programmes of Humanities (English Linguistics, Scandinavian Linguistics), of Translation in Lithuania and Sweden.
