Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
to prepare specialists of broad humanitarian education who perceive ethnical and cultural processes of Scandinavian countries and their development, who are aware of the specificity of the regional state cultures and able to evaluate the cultural historical value of the heritage and possibilities of its use, the diversity and uniqueness of cultures, functions of culture, its root and place in the modern society and regional politics, who know at least one regional language, who are able to use the newest research methods of humanitarian and social sciences (methods of cultural studies, linguistics, ethnology, history, arts, political sciences) and who have scientific research, professional and creative skills.
Learning outcomes:
Knowledge and its use:
- To get acquainted with the culture of Scandinavian countries using the knowledge and methods of the different disciplines (cultural studies, philology, ethnology, history, arts, literature, politic sciences);
- To define the main concepts of the regional culture studies and their integrate disciplines, to use methods of their knowledge;
- To characterize the features of traditional and modern culture of individual Scandinavian states; to identify the particular cultural phenomena and explain their peculiarities of origin, development and continuity;
- To compare the Scandinavian region as integral cultural space with the other countries of Baltic region and European countries using the attitudes of interculturality and internationality.
Ability to perform research:
- To collect primary and secondary written, visual and verbal sources using various techniques of data collecting; classify the research material about regional cultural, ethnical, social and political phenomena;
- To implement the analitic activity using the research methods of cultural studies, ethnology, history, philology, literature, politic sciences and other disciplines which are necessary for the solving of raised problems, research and formulating of reasoned conclusions;
Special abilities:
- To know at least one Scandinavian language in B2 level (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and use it in the practical activity and research;
- To understand the uniqueness of regional culture, its place in modern society and regional politics.
Social abilities:
- To communicate with the professionals and wide society solving actual problems, presenting and publicizing the information about the states of Scandinavian region;
- To identify the regional problems which raise in the cultural, social, political, ethnic areas and suggest the ways of their solution;
- To communicate in the interdisciplinary team coordinating different concerns.
Personal abilities:
- To study independently and plan the process of studies; to adapt to constant changes in the area of professional activity;
- To deepen and expand the knowledge about region, think and argue logically, critically and creatively and solve problems positively;
- To understand moral responsibility for one‘s activities and results which can influence the social, economical, cultural processes, welfare and environment.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Explanation, narration, demonstration of videos, discussions, work in the group, case analysis, preparation of projects, individual work.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Mid-term exam, exam, the presentation of the projects, presentations of group‘s works, the analysis of tasks, paper, review, essay.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
- Students have got possibility to learn at least one regional language (in B2 level);
- They get knowledge from various different disciplines of humanitarian and social sciences (cultural studies, ethnology, history, philology, politic sciences, etc.)

Access to professional activity:
Program is orientated for the training of such specialists:
• Cultural specialists who can work in various institutions of culture, education, science and public communication and in the cultural centres;
• Language teachers who can work in the informal language schools;
• Interpreters;
• Specialists who can work in the museums;
• Guides who can work in the tourism and travel agencies;
• Administrative staff for the Lithuanian and EU institutions and for the other companies where the skills of good regional language and understanding of regional cultures are necessary;

Access to further study:
The graduates can continue their studies in the MA programs of regional culture, ethnology, linguistics, literature, communication, sciences of education, sociology, social anthropology, political sciences, region studies, heritage studies, etc. in Lithuanian and foreign universities.
