Summary of the Profile

Objective(s) of a study programme:
To prepare highly qualified specialists who adhere to professional social work values and objectives, are capable of representing interests of their clients and act as leaders driving the change of social assistance in various complex, interdisciplinary, intersectoral situations and environments.
It is sought that graduates are able to initiate and implement innovative strategies to solve social problems by assessing the complexity of a situation and its ethical consequences, lead processes of social assistance, govern aid organizations (their subdivisions), provide substantiated recommendations for the improvement of social policy, to perform expert assessment of social problems and means of their solutions, to implement scientific research aimed at social work practice development.
Learning outcomes:
Masters of social work are capable to take leadership and to initiate and implement changes by empowering people and structures, to represent rights of persons in need of assistance; they are able to work in multicultural environments, implement functions of advocacy, lead groups/teams, critically reflect on social policy and social processes and submit recommendations for social policy development; they are able to participate in the international social work professional discourse and implement scientific research, as well as to substantiate improvement of social work practice based on research results.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Problem-based teaching, studies of academic literature, lectures, research, discussions, case studies, interactive creative tasks (skillful intervention, ecological map, etc.), practical learning in social work institutions. Part of activities takes place in a virtual learning environment providing students a possibility to choose the most convenient time for their completion. Much attention is paid to cognition and development of self as a leader of social work services’ development.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The principle of cumulative score is applied: part of the assessment consists of written examination (main method of assessment of learning outcomes), another part – evaluation of case analysis, empirical research, project or other activity tasks.
Study subjects (modules), practical training:
The study program focuses both on the development of practice skills and those of applied research. It consists of subjects aimed at development of research competences; subjects which improve social work practice skills; subjects that develop managerial, leadership, organizational competences. During the studies students carry out social work management practice in social service institutions, state, municipal institutions, NGOs. Much attention is paid to the practice reflection at the university. The practice is supervised by a lecturer with a professional supervisor’s diploma.
Future Masters of social work study strategies of a person’s and community empowerment, group dynamics, social work science development, qualitative research, management of social institutions, social cultural identity, social policy, etc.
The Social Work study program is designed for individuals with a Bachelor's degree in social work, as well as for Bachelors of other study fields, who have studied additional compensatory subjects.
Optional courses:
Students can choose a practice placement, a topic of applied research, optional subjects which allows students to form their own study profile (to focus on a certain group of clients, managerial or therapeutic aspects of social work, research).
Distinctive features of a study programme:
The program is distinguished by its multidimensional profile which is achieved by integrating social work therapeutic, managerial, research and leadership competences at individual, group, organization and system levels.
Access to professional activity:
Graduates engage in social work practice, organize social services, or choose scientific research work. They can occupy the positions of social workers, leading positions in social service institutions, as well as in the departments of the state and municipal institutions which administer the field of social assistance and shape its policy.
Access to further study:
After diploma studies (for instance, psychotherapy, supervision, etc.) and doctoral studies (fields of sociology, educology).
