Summary of the Profile

General Description:

Objective(s) of the study program:

To prepare constantly improving specialists in the International Relations security studies who are able to analyse and critically evaluate international processes and their impact on global, regional, and national security, based on theories of International Relations, and historical context, taking into account the specificities of different regions, conventional and unconventional challenges to security and able to pally qualitative and quantitative methods.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge and its application

· Able to explain the basic concepts and theories of political science, philosophy, international relations, security studies, international political economy, foreign policy and conflictology.

· Able to explain in detail the development of individual regions of the world (essential political, social and security processes), the origin, evolution, impact of individual threats to individual, national and international security, and to model the ways of responding to threats.

· Able to reveal important aspects for the officer profession like: military history, military theory, international law, economics, leadership.

Capacity to conduct research

· Able to independently conduct research in the field of political science, applying the concepts, theories, qualitative and quantitative research methods of political science and international relations, substantiating the relevance of research topics, revealing the scientific discourse of research topics, using primary and secondary sources, databases.

Special abilities

· Able to carry out practical and analytical tasks in the Lithuanian Armed Forces, public institutions and international organizations by applying acquired knowledge and skills.

· Able to lead soldiers and units in peacetime and emergency situations, work in a team, applying various teamwork methods, effectively convey information using rhetorical methods and various means of communication.

Social skills

· Ability to perform tasks by working in teams, taking responsibility for their own and colleagues' performance in accordance with professional ethics and citizenship.

· Able to communicate professionally with specialists of Lithuanian and foreign security and defense organizations, representatives of society, international organizations and media in different cultural environments, using Lithuanian and foreign language.

Personal skills

· Able to independently apply the acquired knowledge in the course of professional activities, constantly updating and critically evaluating it, realizing the moral responsibility for their decisions and their impact.

· Able to prepare research and written works by constantly updating knowledge and skills, independently collecting and analyzing data, properly citing, respecting copyright and intellectual property rights.

Activities of teaching and learning:

The program is based on student-centered studies based on research-based teaching. During lectures, seminars, consultations, other activities and independent work, cadets examine today’s issues of international relations. They do this by gaining knowledge of political science, international relations, war and conflict theories, drawing on history, geopolitics, international law, international economics,

regional and security studies. Lectures and seminars use a variety of active methods (discussions, workshops, mapping, presentations, simulations, problem-solving, surveys, written work), audiovisual material, maps, statistical data sets, and group work. During the internship, the practical activities of the officer and work in the state institutions of the Republic of Lithuania are introduced, and practical skills are acquired.

Methods of assessment of learning achievements:

Assessments are based on: tests, closed and open questionnaires, preparation of various written works, presentations, simulations, problem-solving tasks, project preparation, pilot study of a bachelor’s thesis, and bachelor’s theses.

Study subjects (modules), practical training:

The subjects in the field of study (including specialisations study subjects, the internship and thesis) total 160 ECTS.

General university study subjects consists of 50 ECTS.

Distinctive features of the study program:

The study programme differs from other similar study programmes in Lithuania because of its strong orientation towards military and security issues, strong focus on regional and security studies, and preparation of students for work in the Lithuanian Armed Forces and governmental institutions. Study materials are often the result of projects supporting studies, i.e. study materials are prepared on the basis of research conducted by academic staff.

Access to professional activity or further study:

Access to professional activity:

Graduates can work in the Lithuanian Armed Forces, governmental institutions, diplomatic service, non-governmental organizations, private business sector, and analytical centres.

Access to further study:

Graduates can study at master level studies in the area of social sciences at the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, other Lithuanian universities and universities abroad.
