Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To provide students with the opportunity to improve their skills, based on theories and scientific evidence; to analyse, evaluate and make informed decisions; to increase the effectiveness of defence institutions in the Lithuanian Armed Forces and further their careers in the defence sector institutions.
Learning outcomes:
Knowledge and its application:
• familiarisation with management, political science, legal, and economic theories and paradigms, and apply them to the practical challenges faced by defence agencies;
• understanding the institutional set-up of the national security system and assess the overall institutional response to potential threats to international and national security.
Research skills:
• able to identify and address research challenges relevant to the national defence system and its management using quantitative and qualitative social research methods;
• the ability to apply national security threat and risk analysis techniques to the analysis of complex challenges faced by defence institutions.
Special abilities:
• to identify and select approaches and alternatives for the management of human and material resources of defence institutions, based on critical thinking, rational evaluation and creativity;
• able to develop sound solutions for defence institutions operating in unpredictable and changing environments.
Social skills:
• able to communicate and collaborate professionally, with sound reasoning and a good communication of ideas, on defence issues;
• able to take initiative and responsibility in the planning and execution of projects.
Personal skills:
• the ability to critically evaluate the experience gained and to conduct professional activities in accordance with the principles of professional ethics;
• able to update independently the knowledge and skills required for professional activities in defence institutions.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Activities will comprise lectures, seminars, independent work, study of educational literature, problem solving, analysis and presentation of scientific sources, case studies, team assignments (projects). They also include research using social research methods, visits to organisations or visits by representatives of organisations, preparation of a thesis project and internship.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Learning outcomes are measured by formative, diagnostic and summative assessment methods using a cumulative marking system. Achievement will be measured by students’ seminar presentations, case studies, papers, coursework, mid-term reports and examinations, the results of internships and the public defence of the final bachelor’s thesis.

The subjects in the field of study (including the internship and the thesis) represent 180 ECTS: Security and Defence Management, the Lithuanian Political System, Public Governance, International Humanitarian Law, History of War, Strategic Management of Security and Defence Institutions, General and Military Psychology, Economics, Leadership, Defence Economics, Human Resource Management, Ethics, General and Military Sociology, International and National Security, Administrative Regulation of Defence Sector, Financial Management, Project Management in the Defence Sector, Information Security, Social Statistics, Theory of War, Coursework, Sustainable Development and Energy Security, Emergency Management, Defence Technology Development, Public and Strategic Communication, Defence Innovation Management, Cyber Security, Bachelor’s Thesis, Practice.
The general university subjects comprise 20 ECTS: Language Culture and Academic Writing, Philosophy, Foundations of Law, Social Research Methodology.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
The study programme is designed to train defence specialists for the national security system of the Republic of Lithuania. The programme is open only to those who have the status of a soldier according to the Law on the Organisation of the National Defence System and Military Service, as well as civil servants and employees of the national defence system working under employment contracts. This includes civil servants of other state institutions according to the agreements between the Ministry of National Defence and other state institutions, in accordance with the procedure laid down in the Statute of the Academy and other legal acts.
The study programme also focuses on the development of competences that can be easily adapted to a wide range of activities in the security and defence sector, providing graduates with a broader range of long-term career options.
Access to professional activity or further study:
Access to professional activity:
All graduates continue their military service in the Lithuanian National Defence System, but in the event of retirement, this study programme also provides opportunities to pursue a career in public administration-related institutions.
Access to further study:
Successful completion of the bachelor’s degree in Defence Studies will prepare the participants to continue their studies at the Academy or other universities in the master’s degree programme in Defence Studies or other related fields
