Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To train specialists with the core competences required of an army officer, with knowledge of the political, public sector management, economic, social and historical aspects of defence sector activities. Providing the ability to use the sophisticated equipment and technologies used in the armed forces effectively.
Learning outcomes:
Knowledge and its application:
• knowing the scientific theories related to defence studies, their application in Lithuania and other Western countries, and able to apply them in professional activities;
• knowledge of modern technologies and systems used in the defence sector, their development principles and application features;
• knowledge of the theory and history of warfare, legal and economic contexts relevant to the military profession and relevant to decision-making in the defence sector.
Capacity to conduct research:
• able to carry out applied research using social and technological science research methods and independently formulate research tasks relevant to the defence sector.
Special abilities:
• able to select the appropriate methods and means to perform tasks and make decisions by assessing the capabilities of available techniques and technologies.
Social skills:
• able to work in teams to plan and execute joint projects, taking responsibility for their own and their colleagues’ performance, transferring knowledge, and exercising professional ethics and citizenship;
• able to communicate professionally with Lithuanian and foreign security professionals, members of the public, international organisations and the media in a variety of cultural environments, using Lithuanian and foreign languages.
Personal skills:
• able to carry out professional activities independently and as part of a team;
• the ability to keep up-to-date with knowledge and skills and to independently collect and analyse the data needed to perform professional tasks successfully.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Activities will comprise lectures, tutorials, independent work, laboratory work, reading of educational literature, individual and group problem-solving, preparation and presentation of scientific and technological/technical reviews, analysis of scientific sources, practical assignments, seminars, team assignments (projects). They also include visits to organisations or visits by representatives of organisations, a thesis project and practical training.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Learning outcomes are measured by formative, diagnostic and summative assessment methods using a cumulative marking system. Achievement will be measured by students’ seminar presentations, case studies, papers, coursework, mid-term and examination results, the achievement of the results of the internship and the public defence of the bachelor’s thesis.

The subjects in the field of study (including in-depth electives, internships and the preparation of the thesis) amount to 175 ECTS: History of War, Leadership, Critical Thinking and Decision-making, Didactics, Theory of War, Defence Economics, Security and Defence Management, Ethics, Fundamentals of Political Science, Foreign, Security and Defence Policy of Lithuania, Specialisation English, Fundamentals of Communication, Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods, International Humanitarian Law, Coursework, Logistics, Mathematics, Fundamentals of IT, Fundamentals of Technology, Physical Foundations of Technologies, Development of Combat Platform Technologies, Contemporary Military Campaigns and Operations, Introduction to Cyber Security, Computer Networks, Programming (Python), Cyber Threat Intelligence and Incident Management, Ethical Hacking, Vehicles, Engineering and Technology; Transport Infrastructure; Vehicle Transmissions, Chassis, Actuators and Control Systems; Mechanics and Dynamics of Mobile Machines/Vehicles; Maintenance and Repair of Vehicles, Bachelor's Final Thesis, Internship.
General university subjects for 10 ECTS: Language Culture and Academic Writing, Foundations of Law.

The free electives consist of 25 ECTS by choosing one of the modules offered in Economic, Regional Studies, International Security Studies, Logistics, Global Defence, History of War.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
This is the only study programme in Lithuania focusing on the management of military equipment and technologies. The programme outcomes are aligned with the European Union’s qualification requirements for officer degree holders, so that graduates are awarded both a bachelor’s degree and a first officer’s degree.
Access to professional activity or further study:
Access to professional activity:
The bachelor’s degree in Public Security provides graduates with a position as an officer in the Lithuanian Armed Forces and enables them to pursue a career as an officer. Graduates of this programme also have the opportunity to work in the National Defence System as transport, logistics and cyber security specialists, as well as in the logistics services sector and in information technology companies.
Access to further study:
Successful graduates of the bachelor’s degree in Defence Studies will be prepared to continue their studies at the Academy or at other universities for a master’s degree in Management or other related fields of study.
