Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The study programme International Hospitality Management is designed to prepare students to assume management positions in the international hospitality industry. The programme will provide comprehensive knowledge of management of operations and activities of the hospitality business and tools for business development, help to develop sense of social responsibility and cultural awareness, to train desired skills of creative and constructive way of thinking, to be combined with professional knowledge and be applied in practice of a wide array of professional activities in the hospitality industry.

Learning outcomes:
General and subject competences are reflected in the structure of the intended programme of study, the learning outcomes include such competences as: to accept and follow the principles of social responsibility and ethics in professional activities and self-expression; to communicate and cooperate in a constructive manner with professionals and people groups from various fields of life in order to address current issues and future possibilities of development of hospitality organisation; to be responsible for the results and quality of work either working in a team or individually; to demonstrate multicultural self-awareness when acting in the hospitality industry and dealing with issues related to business or hospitality service quality improvement; to creatively apply the knowledge of social sciences, management and professional knowledge, entrepreneurial and project management skills in order to respond to new trends and challenges in the competitive market; to apply practical skills and monitor the functional activities of the hotel/restaurant infrastructure or its elements, to analyse and assess the effectiveness of operational functions of the system, to describe and develop processional maps using appropriate analytical methods and modern information technology tools; to make decisions and formulate economically justified proposals in order to improve management functions; to consider changing needs of the organisation and customers when planning hospitality services and their revision; to foster customer relations through integrating customer experience design management system, planning marketing and event activities designed to meet the expectations of local and international customers; to plan financial matters in a responsible manner and prepare forward-looking proposals in terms of financial future opportunities of the hospitality organisation.

Activities of teaching and learning:
To promote students’ active participation in the study process, the International Hospitality Management study programme in the field of Management studies, will apply a variety of student-cantered teaching methods that are designed and be applied to help students to achieve the learning outcomes; to provide knowledge, but as well desirable by employers skills that enable to prepare students for independent professional career.
The teaching-learning process will go using such active teaching methods as: project/problem-based teaching, involving lectures, teaching in small groups, counselling, literature studies, guest lectures, film screenings, case studies, round table discussions, etc. To develop practical skills, the special attention will be given to the assignments like projects and practical tasks.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The student’s academic achievement assessment system consists of collegial and cumulative assessment. Collegiate assessment will be used to ensure the objectivity of the assessment and to provide opportunity to develop communication skills. Collegiate assessment in the International Hospitality Management study programme will be used for the defense of projects and thesis. During the peer assessment, students will be examined or the projects will be defended in front of a group of professors or their assistants and social partners.
The cumulative assessment will be applied in the International Hospitality Management study Programme with the purpose to encourage students be proactive during the study time; to eliminate plagiarism when completion of certain type of tasks are focused on theoretical knowledge.
Applying cumulative assessment, the course professor has a better chance to monitor students’ performance and progress through the course time; to apply a greater variety of assessment methods. The cumulative assessment will be applied in case of examination, only when it will form just a portion of total task to be assessed. Some other assessments will be made at the choice of the course professor, who will be assessing various written works (e.g. project work or independent work), other practical tasks that allow students to demonstrate their theoretic and practical competencies acquired during their studies.
The assessment will be based on a ten-point scale. The assessment criteria will be aligned to the outcomes of the study programme and the subject, and the relevance of the subject studied. The structure of the cumulative mark will be set out in the description of each course.

Framework:
Study subjects (modules), practical training:
General study subjects – 15 credits: Economics (6 credits), Communication and Culture academic writing + career planning – 4 credits), Entrepreneurship (5 credits).
Study field subjects - at least 135 credits: Hospitality Operations, Food and Beverage Theory and Practice, Fundamentals of Hospitality Marketing, Event Management and Operations, Hospitality Culture I-II, Applied English, Fundamentals of Hospitality Management, Hospitality Business, International Service Marketing, Accounting, Applied Hospitality Management, Human Resource Management, Service Operations Management, Financial Analysis, Business Tools I-II, Integrated Tourism Management, Hospitality Experience Design, Crisis and Security Management, Corporate Business, Business Ethics, , Business Plan and Project Management, Research Methods.
Practicum - 30 credits: Practicum will take place in a selected organization of hospitality industry for 20 weeks (30 kr.)
Final project - 12 credits.

Students are given the opportunity to enhance their professional knowledge and practical skills by choosing subjects from the list of elective courses (LPD) (Annex X). The International Hospitality Management study programme provides opportunity to choose two free elective subjects, which are integrated into semester III (5 credits) and semester IV (4 credits). By choosing a subject from the list of free electives, students will be able to acquire additional competences in their chosen field of the hospitality sector (MICE and event organising, development of new tourism products, franchising in the hospitality business, etc.). The proposed LPDs are a significant addition to the International Hospitality Management study programme, it opens up wider opportunities for students to gain a broader understanding of specific activities and work duties within the hospitality sector, to take into consideration their personal learning objectives and priorities, to facilitate their choice and planning of career paths.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
The programme has been developed in close cooperation with EHL (Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne - the world's highest ranked hospitality management university, which has been training hospitality professionals for more than 125 years). VVK has been consistently guided by EHL's recommendations, in order to develop a unique International Hospitality Management study programme adapted to the needs of the countries of the Baltic Sea Region and the VVKs in order to train highly qualified hospitality managers. The distinctive features of the study programme include:
 Innovative teaching methods - active, student-centered, involving learning, such as project-based learning, problem-based learning, case studies, discussions, real practical activities with strong feedback. All of them will aim to encourage students' initiative, independent learning and responsibility;
 the study classes will take place in the environment of the high ranked hotels and restaurants that have premises adapted to the training purpose;
 to complete practical assignments of the course, students will have an excellent opportunity to apply knowledge and acquired competencies in a real life situations working side by side with professionals and interacting with them on a day to day basis;
 in the 5th semester of studies, students will undertake a compulsory (20 weeks long) internship working and taking various duties in top-category hotels and their departments;
 the course will be taught exclusively in English (min. B2 level);
 in terms of subject content, the study programme is structured in a way to train and maintain the balance between hard and soft skills;
 teaching will be provided by teachers (qualified learning facilitators), who will have to undergo QLF (Qualified Learning Facilitator) Certification Training to become EHL accredited teachers, ready to transfer EHL’s educational philosophy to VVKs students and to ensure the quality of a coherent teaching-learning process in line with EHL values and the world-renowned standards.
The abovementioned unique features of the study programme will ensure the highest quality in the hospitality management training in the Baltic Sea Region as well will pave a way to a wide range of employment possibilities worldwide.

Graduates of Vilnius Business College who once have obtained a professional bachelor's degree in international hospitality management may continue their studies at the higher educational institutions of the Republic of Lithuania or foreign countries by taking master's studies in the same study field.
