Summary of the Profile

Objective(s) of a study programme:
The aim of the program is to educate lifetime learning specialists equipped with up to date knowledge in social theory and methodology, ready for academic research activity, possessing skills to apply acquired theoretical knowledge in practical fields; to cultivate creative abilities of sociological imagination and independent, open, and critical thinking, to coach sociological professional ethics, to teach understanding social events and facts, as well as their own sociological work in the broad cultural perspective.

Learning outcomes:
A holder of a Master's degree in Sociology has a good knowledge in the sociological theory and methods, as well as the practical skills to operate software for collecting, processing and analyzing the data. He/she has competence to design and implement qualitative and quantitative research projects, provide sociological expertise of social problems and institution design, has ability to analyze, evaluate and solve problems in the social structure functioning and change, to understands these issues in the light of local, international, and global perspectives. A graduate has responsible decision making skills and is able to contribute to the social well-being through active engagement.

Lectures, class discussions, presentations, essay writing, individual and group research work, home assignments
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The main form of evaluation is an examination. However, courses units may be evaluated by the pass/fail evaluation as well. Every course unit is concluded with either a written or written-oral examination or pass/fail evaluation. Student's knowledge and general performance during the exam are evaluated using grading scale from 1 (very poor) to 10 (excellent), or by pass or fail evaluation in the cases when pass/fail evaluation is foreseen as a final evaluation of the course unit.
Study subjects (modules), practical training:
Master study programme invites to upgrade elementary sociological education, providing state of art knowledge of the research frontier in sociological theory, methodology, research on the contemporary state of Lithuanian society, and in several "hyphen-sociologies". The obligatory courses taught during the first semester and third semesters "Reflexive Sociology: Bourdieu" and "Sociological Rational Choice Theory" introduce into the theoretical debates in the the contemporary sociology. Other obligatory courses invite to get the knowledge-in-depth in the three special fields of sociological research (courses "Social Problems of Deviance", "Sociology of Knowledge", "Political Sociology"). The obligatory courses "Current Topics in the Methodology of Social Science" and "Methods of Visual Sociology" are designed to assist students in their work on their MA thesis projects, upgrading their knowledge and skills in the social research methodology.
Studies include practical training in sociological research (200 hours). Training aims at developing skills in solving research design problems, interpreting results, working out conclusions.

(1) Sociology of Law and Deviance;
(2) Sociological Theory and Methodology;
(3) Socioeconomic Change in the Contemporary Lithuania;
(4) Applied Cultural Sociology.
Optional courses:
Each semester student can select from 6-8 optional courses to build his/her individual study profile
Distinctive features of a study programme:
It is the only complete MA in sociology programme in Lithuania. Kindred MA programmes comprehend only some special branch of sociology or teach sociology as minor subject in combination with other discipline (anthropology, psychology et al.)
Access to professional activity:
A graduate can work as a researcher at various academic institutions, as an expert in the fields of politics, law, economy, communications, he/she can supervise and conduct applied research in the areas of public opinion research, marketing, public administration, public relations, and advertising; to work in non-governmental organizations and teach at secondary schools and colleges.
Access to further study:
Doctoral-level studies in sociology and other social sciences.
