Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The aim is to prepare highly skilled professional civil engineers with extensive research-based knowledge of civil engineering, technology, management and related disciplines who will also possess an ability to creatively apply the latest civil engineering theories, methods and technologies in practice; detect, formulate and address complex, incompletely described construction technology, management and business problems; assess the impact of decisions on the economy, environment and the society; perform analytical, scientific modelling and experimental research; take a critical look at research data and offer conclusions; be effective working either alone or in a team; manage the work of professionals from different disciplines and of different levels; communicate with the engineering community and the society at large both at national and international scale; and pursue lifelong learning.
Learning outcomes:
Knowledge
Knows the fundamentals of natural sciences and mathematics and is able to apply that knowledge creatively; has deep knowledge and understanding of the principles of civil engineering studies and is able to apply them for new construction technology and management tasks' solutions.
Has extensive research-based knowledge of construction technology and related disciplines; awareness of the latest advances in civil engineering and is able to take a critical look at them.
Research skills
Is able to gather, analyse and interpret information from databases and other sources of scientific and engineering information necessary for job performance, determine the suitability of problem solving methods and approaches, and follow best practices.
Is able to assess a need for research, plan the research in qualified way, choose the most appropriate research methods, perform analytical research, scientific modelling and experimental research, take a critical look at research results and provide conclusions.
Engineering analysis
Is able to detect, formulate and address complex, incompletely described construction technology, management and business problems taking into account social, health, safety at work, fire safety, environmental and commercial requirements, to apply innovative methods and advanced information technologies.
Is able to use their body of knowledge and understanding in addressing practical construction technology and management problems; to apply theoretical models and research methods, including mathematical analysis, computational modelling and experimental research, in a proper manner.
Engineering design
Is able to apply acquired knowledge and understanding in practice when addressing problems related to construction technology design, construction planning, project and business management, facilities management, building reconstruction, modernisation and maintenance, and other multifaceted, technically indeterminate and vaguely defined problems; to propose new and original engineering ideas and methods.
Personal and social abilities
Is able to effectively work either individually or in a team, pursue lifelong learning, and manage the work of professionals from different disciplines and of different levels; is capable to communicate with engineering community and the society at large at national and international scale.
Has a good knowledge of various aspects related to project management and business; an understanding of how technological decisions correlate with their economic effects; is able to assess impacts on the society and environment, adhere to professional ethics and the norms of engineering, take responsibility of the activities.
Engineering practice ability
Understands construction processes as a whole; is familiar with the principles of construction planning and the interaction of different segments in a chain; is able to apply knowledge from different disciplines in construction project and business management, to apply the principles of sustainable development.
Is aware of technologies that can be applied in construction and understands their limitations; is able to choose appropriate engineering equipment and software.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Interactive lectures and problem based learning, laboratory works, practices, demonstration lectures, individual or team work tasks, case studies, reports and papers information search and summarising, study of research and study literature, scietific experiments (testing)
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Cumulative assessment system: individual work tasks and tests, reports of laboratory works and practices, course and complex projects, defence of final thesis.
