Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To prepare highly qualified road and railway engineering specialists, who:
1) are able to analyse and solve tasks and problems of planning, construction, material selection and control, operation, traffic safety, maintenance and renewal with the help of innovative knowledge;
2) independently makes informed decisions based on the results of systematic research and practical experience;
3) seeks to create value and develop independently through life-long learning.

Learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
Will know the principles of road and railway engineering, will understand the importance of knowledge interaction and integration of different directions and areas in solving problematic issues of road and railway design, construction, maintenance, rehabilitation (repair), reconstruction and traffic organization, and traffic safety.

Will know the latest achievements in road and railway engineering, methodologies of design, modelling and development of pavement structures and principled theoretical solutions, will better understand how the achievements of work organization, investment planning and modern system are applied.

Research Skills:
Will be able to plan and perform analytical, modeling and experimental researches of roads and railways, critically evaluate data and present conclusions.

Will be able to identify, search out and evaluate data needed for road and railway engineering research using databases and other sources of information, and able to select and apply appropriate research and research methods in practical activities requiring novelty and knowledge integration, including research and innovation.

Engineering Analysis:
Will be able to perceive, analyse, combine atypical, incompletely described road and railway engineering problems, clearly formulate tasks for solving these problems by applying mathematical analysis, computational simulation and experimental research methods.

Will be able to apply innovative methods to solve specific problems by reasoning the solutions in the field of road and railway design, construction, maintenance and reconstruction, infrastructure planning and traffic safety management.

Engineering Design:
Will be able to apply the acquired knowledge and understanding in solving non-standard problems in the stages of road and railway design, construction, maintenance, reconstruction, infrastructure planning, traffic organization and traffic safety assessment; to develop new and original engineering ideas and methods.

Will be able to assess and select appropriate design solutions necessary for the design, construction, maintenance, reconstruction, infrastructure planning, traffic management and safety of roads and railways in the face of technically undefined and unspecified problems.

Personal and Social Abilities:
Will be able to communicate with the engineering community both national and international levels; to substantiate the conclusions of their research and reasoning, to provide them in an understandable oral and written way to concern persons of various fields and interests of different types of education.

Holisticaly will understand the impact of engineering decisions on society and the environment, understand the possible ethical, technical, economic, social consequences and responsibility for their decisions, can adhere to the norms of professional ethics and engineering, understand the links between road and railway engineering solutions with their economic consequences.

Engineering Practice Ability:
Will be able to combine knowledge of different directions and to solve multiple engineering problems of roads and railways; will have a detailed understanding of the applied methods and methodologies, and be able to select engineering equipment and software.

Will know very well the principles of organization and management of road and railway engineering activities, understand the interaction of its chains; will be able to evaluate engineering activities in terms of occupational safety and environmental protection.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Individual and group work, common and specific education, differentiated, modular, formal and non-formal education and other. Refractive and problematic lectures, laboratory work, tutorials, internship, individual or team self-contained work, distance learning, guest lectures by public and private sector representatives, case analysis, paper works, searching of necessary information and generalization, reading of educational and scientific books and articles (papers), preparation of oral presentation, writing of scientific paper and presentation in seminar (conference)
