Summary of the Profile

Objective(s) of a study programme:
The aim of the second cycle study programme Film Art is to train a professional filmmaker who is able to initiate and independently and/or collegially implement innovative creative projects (or parts thereof) and carry out relevant artistic research in his/her specific field while at the same time developing individual creative style and applying practical and theoretical knowledge and skills related to directing, producing, filming and sound design.

Learning outcomes:
The graduate will be able to name, compare, analyse and critically evaluate the tendencies of cinema in various contexts as well as recognise the genres and directions of contemporary cinema; understand and will be able to analyse and interpret general cultural phenomena.
The graduate will know the theoretical and practical principles of filmmaking and production and be able to develop and deepen them in the context of a specific filmmaking-related profession.
The graduate will have the psychological knowledge necessary to help solve problems in the group and personal creative process taking place in a new and unusual environment.
The graduate will know the principles of film management and the legal framework of the film art sector, and be able to apply this knowledge in creative film art projects and research activities.
The graduate will be able to initiate and independently perform artistic research, directly link it with creative practice, conceptualise and critically evaluate relevant practical problems in his/her professional field and delve into their specific aspects.
The graduate will be able to select and creatively apply appropriate artistic research methods and techniques, analyse, interpret, systematise, summarise information and formulate conclusions that meet the purpose of artistic research.
The graduate will be able to evaluate and substantiate the originality and relevance of a creative project and artistic research in the national and international contexts, make decisions to improve the field of film art and evaluate both the alternatives and the consequences of possible solutions.
The graduate will be able to develop individual creative style, raise new ideas and experiment in his/her professional activities while working in a changing environment.
The graduate will be able to initiate and execute innovative filmmaking-related projects, apply and implement appropriate modern technologies and creative or managerial methods for the implementation of a specific cinematic phenomenon or part thereof as well as make decisions for the improvement of the film art field.
The graduate will be able to effectively plan the stages of preparation of a creative film art project or parts thereof and the performance of film art research, as well as to predict possible risks and anticipate ways to overcome them.
When performing artistic, creative and research activities and presenting their results, the graduate will be able to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms in the official and foreign language with specialists in his/her own and other fields and use professional vocabulary.
The graduate is able to work individually and in a team in a professional and interdisciplinary environment, organise and manage the work flow, take leadership and responsibility for the quality and improvement of his/her own and his/her team’s activities by following professional ethics and citizenship.
The graduate will be able to communicate with the audience in a variety of socio-cultural contexts, present the results of his/her creative activities and artistic research, and use the most effective communication methods and strategies.
The graduate will understand the importance of lifelong learning, be able to purposefully choose the directions and ways of further improvement, use personal organisational skills, independently identify and adhere to operational priorities, adapt to new situations and create in a competitive environment.
The graduate will be able to take the initiative in solving emerging creative and organisational problems, and be aware of the moral responsibility for the impact of their decisions on social, economic, cultural development and well-being, and the environment.
Using systematic and strategic thinking in independent artistic, creative and research activities, the graduate will be able to adapt to changing technological and climate change-related conditions.
The graduate will be able to evaluate his/her own and other film artists’ activities, accept criticism and use it effectively for personal development for developing independent professional and artistic research activities.

Activities of teaching and learning:
Problem-based teaching, inclusive lecture, individual work with a student, practicums, creative exercises, demonstrations, discussions, use of students’ personal experience, practical development of creative skills, preparation of practical tasks, independent work, research methods (information search and analysis, report preparation and presentation), preparation of written work.

Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Assessment is an integral part of the study process and is, therefore, carried out on a regular basis through assessing and evaluating students’ independent work, presentations, individually-prepared tasks.
The main assessment methods: preview, audition, presentation of a creative project, oral and written examination, testing, review of the literature and other sources of information, presentation and defence of a written work, projects (individual and group), summative assessment methods.
The study results of a certain subject can be decided by the results of intermediate projects/works. The studies of each subject are completed by an exam. The study programme is completed by the assessment of the graduate’s competence during the public defence procedure of the final master’s project.
The evaluation of the examinations and the defence of the Final Thesis is based on the 10-point grading system. The tests are evaluated on a pass-fail grading system.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
It is the only study programme of its kind in Lithuania in which professionals in the field of cinema (video directing, cinematography, sound design and film production) deepen and expand the knowledge and skills acquired in the first cycle studies by realising a creative film-related project and conducting relevant artistic research in their field.
Students are educated by renowned Lithuanian film artists and scientists, and enjoy lectures by visiting lecturers from abroad, who are invited on a regular basis, as well as close cooperation with representatives of the country’s film industry.

Access to professional activity:
After graduating from the second cycle study programme Film Art, graduates can work in Lithuanian and foreign film and TV production companies, teach at a university and express themselves independently in creative artistic activities.

Access to further study:
After completing the second cycle study programme Film Art, graduates can continue their studies in doctoral studies in the field of arts.
