Summary of the Profile

Objective(s) of a study programme:
The primary aim of social work programme is to provide social work oriented, higher college education consistent with European standards, training specialists, whose professional expertise will enable them to effectively deal with the social problems of Lithuanian rural (parish) communities in order to achieve complete functioning of each individual, preparing a specialist who would be able to act as a mediator between people and the surrounding social environment, in accordance with human rights, social justice, Christian values and the social worker's code of ethics.
Learning outcomes:
After graduating from the social work programme of the college, the following learning outcomes will be achieved:
Knowledge and its application. During the period of social work practical training and research students will gain the skills to apply the knowledge of the following: methods of social work with an individual, family, group and community; various theories that are related to a person‘s social environment, social work development and needs , social problems and their possible solutions; the basics of social research methodology; the principles of social work ethics and Christian values; the Lithuanian social policy, legislation and regulatory documents, the social functioning of the institutions and their co-operation; social sciences, humanities, biomedicine, etc., the basics of scientific theories; the specifics of parish community mobilization.
The skills to conduct research. The graduates will acquire the skills to use qualitative and quantitative information, they will be able to apply social research methods in their professional activities, solving social problems and improving the professional development; they will be competent to perform both quantitative and qualitative research in order to monitor a person‘s environment, applying innovations to their practical work.
Social skills. The competency to positively interact and collaborate with the client and his environment, with a group, a family and a community to solve their social problems; to develop interdisciplinary cooperation with colleagues and politicians; to apply analytical, critical and creative thinking powers organizing and implementing social work services; to prepare and manage documents, to express themselves accurately using Lithuanian as well as a foreign language; to understand and evaluate the social reality, to enhance the professional image of a social worker, to understand the significance of social work improving social welfare and sustainable development of an individual and the environment .
Personal skills. The college graduates will acquire the skills to disseminate personal social work experience and improve their professional skills, i.e. their knowledge, values, abilities to assess their own learning and professional development needs. Their professional activities will be guided by human values based on humanism, social justice and Christian values, independent decision-making and evaluation of feedback results. They will also be able to collect and process information, to work with confidential information, to use information technologies, to promote the development of a mature, responsible and moral personality, to accumulate knowledge-based experience that reveals the value of social work in the community.
Specific skills. The competency to recognize and evaluate the needs and strengths of an individual, group, family and community; to plan, design, implement and evaluate the activities of social support; to recognize the nature of social issues in order to provide alternative solutions using a variety of social work methods; to represent clients in various organizations, to develop mutually positive relationships with clients, to apply different methodologies to encourage the client; to assess social support process aiming at active participation of the clients; to follow the management principles mobilizing local communities, to organize and provide social work services in communities, NGOs, parishes striving to positive changes in the society; to analyze and apply existing models of social welfare policies; to train volunteers and new specialists sharing professional experience; to organize the events that meet spiritual needs of a particular community.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Studies are carried out during 3 years (6 semesters). Study courses are equally set out in each semester (6-7 courses in each semester). During studies lectures, practical activities, individual lecturer‘s work with the student, independent student‘s work, elements of scientific work. Exams are set equally in all semesters. The final work is presented and defended in the 6th semester. Three practices are projected in the program as well as optional courses. In the social work study program various forms of activities (lectures, practice, seminars, excursions, etc.) and methods (demonstration, discussions, group work, projects, case analysis, tests, etc.) are projected, it will create condition for the learning outcomes.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Study results are evaluated based on total rating: IP – independent work – 20 % of the final grade + CT - control tasks - 20 % of the final grade + EG – exam grade - 60 % of the final grade. Practices are evaluated based on this total rating: GR – grade of practice report - 20 % of the final grade + A – attendance - 20 % of the final grade + PD – practice defense grade - 50 % of the final grade + AE - student‘s activities evaluation in the practice. The final work is evaluated based on these criteria: evaluation of the practical (project) part of the final thesis, evaluation of the written part of thesis, presentation of the thesis.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
Study program is directed to the specific social activities‘ field – social work in community, especially in parish community, therefore the basis of the program are values of the social Christian work and development of volunteer work within the community that are based on social Church‘s education. Importance of social work in the third sector is highlighted in the program, the volunteerism, citizenship and social work‘s management aspects are stressed.
