Summary of the Profile

Objective(s) of a study programme:
To train a broad-profiled, socially active and professional specialist of performing and film arts, who has knowledge of the specific character of contemporary performing and film arts as well as consistent patterns of their development, is able to analyse in a competent manner and assess critically the processes of artistic expression in theatre, dance, film and television from a in historical, theoretical and social perspectives.

Learning outcomes:
The graduate will know and be able to analyse and evaluate, in both written and oral forms, the patterns of the development of Lithuanian and world theatre and cinema, assign and explain the developmental tendencies of the theatre and cinema creative process, and define the artistic peculiarities of stage and cinema phenomena.
The graduate will be able to distinguish and compare the expression of theatre and cinema of different European and world national cultures; will be able to analyse and evaluate Lithuanian theatre and cinema in an intercultural context.
The graduate will be able to critically analyse and interpret specific phenomena of the performing and cinematic arts in a general socio-cultural context.
The graduate will be able to independently accumulate as well as critically, constructively and argumentatively analyse information and evaluate various phenomena of the performing and cinematic arts in both written and oral forms.
The graduate will be able to search for information in various sources, evaluate it, select, analyse, systematise and use it in various tasks.
The graduate will be able to systematically collect, analyse and summarise theatre and film research data, and perform independent critical, analytical and research analysis of historical and contemporary processes of stage and film arts.
The graduate will be able to perform historical, critical and/or analytical research and present it and the obtained results in the form of a scientific article, study and/or review; will be able to apply various methodologies, revealing the uniqueness of the work or phenomenon in question.
The graduate will be able to analyse and evaluate the expression of theatre and cinema in the general context of the diversity of other arts (literature, art, media) and audiovisual communication, as well as identify and explain the specific and natural ways of expression of theatre and cinema.
The graduate will be able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills when performing practical activities during his/her internship in various cultural and art institutions, media.
Applying the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the graduate will be able to participate professionally in the creative process of performing and cinematic arts.
The graduate will be able to publicly express a professional and reasoned opinion on various theatrical and cinematic phenomena and specific works.
The graduate will be able to communicate correctly and politely, and to convey information to the art community and other members of society in such way that they will easily understand it.
The graduate will be able to effectively apply the acquired knowledge, use his/her critical, analytical thinking, imagination and creativity.
The graduate will be able to independently accumulate, analyse and interpret information, and develop critically argued ideas.
The graduate will be able to analyse and evaluate his/her own and others’ work, be responsible for the quality of his/her work, as well as to accept criticism and express it constructively.

Activities of teaching and learning:
Main teaching and learning methods: teaching (explanation, narration, illustration, demonstration), studies of literature, audio, video, scientific literature and other sources of information (demonstration, review, analysis, interpretation), active listening, use of students’ personal experience, data collection, project preparation, group work, group discussion, performance of practical tasks, creative exercises (brainstorming, mind maps), preparation and presentation of written works (reports), presentation of personal experience, reflection, providing feedback; preparation and defence of the final work.
Main forms of contact work: individual and group theoretical and practical classes, consultations, independent work.

Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Assessment is an integral part of the study process and is, therefore, carried out on a regular basis through assessing and evaluating students’ independent work, presentations and individually-prepared tasks. Students’ knowledge is also assessed by the results of tests and exams.
The evaluation of student’s performance is based on a cumulative grading system, i.e., the final grade is composed of the evaluation of intermediate tests and the final examination.
Methods of assessment of study results: formative (work during group and individual sessions) and cumulative (summative) assessment: intermediate assessment, testing, oral and written survey, presentation of projects, course papers, reports and speeches; presentation and defence of the final work.
The evaluation of the examinations and the defence of the Final Thesis is based on the 10-point grading system. The tests are evaluated on a pass-fail grading system.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
This study programme is the only such programme among similar programmes offered by other higher education institutions.
By providing knowledge and skills in the fields of theatre and film theory and critique, the programme simultaneously provides an opportunity to deepen knowledge and develop skills in the creative practices of the performing arts, film and audiovisual arts. Starting with the third year of study, students have the opportunity to choose a theatre or film specialization.

Access to professional activity:
Graduates are able to work in various cultural, educational, publishing and media institutions as well as in the fields of state and independent performing arts and cinema production and distribution, participate in the implementation of various artistic projects, as well are able to carry out independent creative and artistic activities; are able to work as stage and film art critics, heads of theatres’ literature departments, curators of theatre and film festivals and other art projects (and be responsible for their programmes), and compilers of educational theatre and film programmes.

Access to further study:
Upon completion of the first cycle study programme History and Criticism of Performing and Film Arts, graduates can continue their education in the second cycle study programme in the field of theatre and film.
