General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To prepare social workers, whose activity is based on the body of knowledge, skills, values, and experience, which allows the formation of key social worker’s social and personal competencies (social problem diagnosis and information, social support organisation and change management, interpersonal relationship formation and communication, mediation and counselling, reflection and supervision, professional development and appropriate representation of the social worker profession).
Learning outcomes:
Knowledge and its application arba Applied knowledge. Knows social work theory and methods, the development of the social work profession in the country, theories of human behaviour and its change, social problems and their expression in the social environment, principles of professional ethics, methodology of applied research, human rights and social justice, national social policy, organisation of social work, interprofessional co-operation, information, communication and assistive technologies, and the principles of sustainable development, and applies this knowledge in identifying the need for social services, in the provision of social services to clients, and in the conduct of applied research Knows the fundamentals of social sciences, humanities and other theories and their application in delivering social services to clients. Capacity to conduct research: Conducts practice-oriented applied research in social work, interpreting its results in the context of specific social service delivery institutions and social policy. Applies the results of applied research to the solution of specific social problems, to the development of professional practice, to the implementation of social work innovations. Special skills: Recognises, analyses and assesses the needs and strengths of an individual, family, group, community (hereinafter referred to as “client”), is guided by legal normative and institutional documents, develops the social, hygienic and work skills of the individual, predicts the possible occurrence of social problems in the community, plans, delivers and documents social services, assesses their impact on the client, applies a variety of social work methods, building a relationship of mutual trust with the client, representing the client’s rights and interests, using internal and external resources, motivating and empowering the client for self-help. Develops and implements client assistance plans and social projects at institutional, regional and national levels, appropriately allocates resources, evaluates the effectiveness of social services and programmes. Cooperates with representatives of various institutions in the organisation and delivery of social services with the aim of empowering clients, thereby contributing to social well-being. Analyses and explains the impact of social policy on the promotion of human rights and the reduction of social exclusion. In practice, is guided by the principles of social justice, human rights, social work values and professional ethics, and provides insights for improving their implementation. Social skills: Communicates and collaborates effectively with clients, co other professionals, politicians, the media, academics, guided by the principles of mutual respect, understanding and agreements, as well as ethical standards. Fluent and persuasive in oral and written communication, communicates effectively in the professional environment and in the community in Lithuanian and foreign languages, sign language. Discusses relevant professional issues in order to develop and strengthen the social work profession. Personal skills: Reflects, analyses and critically evaluates their own professional practice and understands the importance of lifelong learning. Makes independent judgements when required to act in a defined situation and draws on professional knowledge. Gathers and organises information from national and international sources, uses information, communication and assistive technologies and handles confidential information responsibly. Takes care of their self-knowledge and development, improves their professional qualifications, disseminates good practice and develops the representation of the social work profession.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Teaching and learning activities are oriented towards the development of students’ personal, social, research, and special competencies, through application of cognitive, knowledge conceptualization, action, individual learning empowering, investigation and self-control methods: interactive/involving lectures and workshops, creative tasks, seminars, individual and group work, conception mapping, learning by doing, reflective diaries, essay writing, experimental situational learning, problem and project learning, and other methods oriented towards development of practical problem analysis skills, discussion, case studies, independent work, reflections, what are based on positive professional self-development and self-awareness. The methods for students’ individual work, tasks, and hours for consulting are provided.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The assessment of learning outcomes is a part of studies’ process. The assessment is carried out through all semester and at the end of the course - during the exam session. The acquired knowledge and skills are assessed on a ten-point scale. The cumulative assessment is applied. The outcomes of the study programme subjects are assessed during the mid-term assignments (written surveys, tests, essays, control works, creative tasks, projects, experience diaries, portfolios, etc.). The grades from mid-term assignments are collected during the course within the semester and compound the part of the final grade from the course. Each subject studies conclude with the exam or with the assessment of student’s individual work (project, practice evaluation, etc.). The final assessment is allowed only if midterm assignments are complete. The final grade of the course is compounded from mid-term assignments grades and exam grades. Each part has its own percentage provided in the subject description.

Supervised Practice – Introductory Social Work Practice, Case-Based Social Work Practice, Social Work with Family Practice, Community-Based Social Work Practice, Final Independent Social Work Practice. The study program concludes with Thesis work.
Specialisations:
Work with the Deaf Community – Deaf Community, Lithuanian Sign Language, Social Work with Hearing Impaired Persons, Specialization Practice; The goal of the specialization – to develop the competences of social work students that are required to provide social services to the hard of hearing. Work with Older and Aged Persons – Gerontology, Social Care and Assistance, Palliative Care, Specialization Practice. The goal of the specialization – to develop the competences of social work students that are required to provide social aid to palliative care patients. Social Work in Correctional Facilities – Law Psychology, Social Isolation and Resocialization of Convicted Persons, Sentence Serving Law, Specialization Practice. The goal of the specialization – to prepare highly personally and professionally qualified social workers, capable of working professionally inside the correctional system while following the requirements of the dynamic protection model, creating and carrying out contemporary correctional programmes for the behaviour and reflection of the inmates based on positive relationships. Social Work with Young People – Preventive Social Work, Sociocultural Context of Social Work with Young People, Social Work with Young People, Specialization Practice. The goal of the specialization – to prepare social workers capable of working with vulnerable and unemployed young people who are not enrolled in school, using various methods to develop their achievements, increasing the opportunities of young people to successfully integrate into society and the work force, forming their positive behaviour.

Students have the option to choose alternative subjects of the programme according to their interests, client group, and so on, by choosing the modules of specialization.

Graduates will be able to work as social workers in public and private social security, education, health care, law enforcement agencies: social welfare departments, child protection services, day care centres for children, people with disabilities, the older and aged persons, boarding homes, family homes, orphanages, social care homes, hospitals, rehabilitation departments, schools, prisons, various non-public organizations or communities and etc.

Graduates can continue their studies in Lithuanian and foreign institutions of higher education, programmes dedicated to social sciences in the field of social work, education science or sociology.
