Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The aim of Horticulture SP is to train an agricultural specialist with theoretical knowledge, applied and analytical skills, capable of setting up a business, i.e. carrying out the activities of a specialised farm, rationally selecting and applying horticultural, horticultural and floricultural technologies, organising the marketing of agricultural production, ensuring its quality, and being able to carry out maintenance work on ornamental plants. The first sub-objective is to broaden the worldview of horticulture students, to promote critical thinking, civic engagement, awareness of globalisation processes and the ability to act in an intercultural space. The second sub-objective is to develop a qualified agricultural specialist who is able to organise and plan the creation of a specialised farm, who is aware of the regularities in the formation of yields and their quality, and who is able to cultivate agricultural and ornamental plants and to market their production using the latest technologies and sustainable environmental principles. The third sub-objective is to develop a creative, entrepreneurial and diversified mindset, capable of working in a team, making independent decisions and pursuing lifelong professional development.

Learning outcomes:
1.1.Understands the rational principles of land use and the environmental impact of economic activities, and is aware of the problems and contexts of adjacent fields of study, their solutions and the possibilities of their application in professional practice.
2.1. Knows the legal and normative documents of the Republic of Lithuania and the EU regulating agricultural activities
2.2 Knows and understands the morphological and bio-ecological characteristics of plants and the environmental impact of agricultural activities.
2.3. be able to collect and analyse sources of information, use databases, computer programmes, laboratory equipment, select appropriate methods, carry out experimental studies, process and evaluate the results obtained and draw conclusions.
2.4 Be able to assess the quality of agricultural production.
2.5. be able to organise and plan the establishment of a specialised farm, the patterns of yield and quality formation, and the marketing of production.
2.6. be able to provide services and advice on plant production and care.
3.1 Understands the Lithuanian business environment and the laws in force. Able to solve problems arising in the professional activity independently and in a team. Comply with professional and ethical standards and understand responsibility for own performance.
3.2 Understands the importance of individual lifelong learning and the need for continuous professional development, and is able to interact with agricultural professionals and the public in solving professional problems.
Activities of teaching and learning:
The main study methods that are applied in the University are traditional and thematic authentic lectures of social partners, practice and laboratory works, investigation and/or analysis of a specific case by providing one’s own speculations in the form of reflection, work in small groups by performing individual assignments, seminars, discussions; development, introduction and discussion of course projects, training and industrial (speciality) practice, oriented active learning/teaching methods are applied. Specific situations which arise during works and projects are analysed and solved by using acquired knowledge and competences in a complex way.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
When assessing student’s results define application of the cumulative assessment system. Observing the principles of consistency and systematicity, study subject programmes include intermediate testing, during which specific learning outcomes are assessed. Studies of each subject are terminated with the final exam. The prevailing methods of learning outcome assessment are test, report, defence of laboratory work description, presentation of individual assignment or project, presentation in a seminar on the selected topic, collegial assessmen

Optional courses:
Students can choose one of the optional general college study courses (3 credits).
Additionally, 9 credits are allocated for elective courses. These courses can be selected from the list of courses offered by the college or may include courses previously taken as electives at other higher education institutions in Lithuania or abroad.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
Graduates of Horticulture studies can organize the management and marketing of gardens and orchards; organize the management and marketing of horticultural farms; propagate, cultivate and care for horticultural and ornamental plants, and floriculture; provide advice on plant cultivation and care; work for companies involved in the marketing of horticultural, horticultural, ornamental plants and their care products; set up a farm or a business; and provide plant care services.
Access to professional activity:
Graduates will be able to work on farms and in companies involved in the production and marketing of fruit, berries, vegetables and flowers, as well as in plant nurseries and nurseries. Graduates will be able to work in botanical gardens, public institutions, etc. They will also be able to set up their own company or farm, organize their activities, and engage in individual activities in the horticultural services sector.
Access to further study:
Graduates can continue their studies and obtain a master’s degree.
