Summary of the Profile
General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
to prepare a medical specialist with the professional qualifications of a cardiac surgeon and thoracic surgeon, interested in scientific innovations and seeking a higher qualification.
Learning outcomes:
After graduation, the resident will know the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of the surgery of cardiothoracic diseases.
The resident will be able to perform a general somatic evaluation of the patient, to find out and interpret the cardiological and chest diseases symptoms, to collect anamnesis and interpret it, to perform a patient examination, to diagnose.
The resident will be able to investigate the clinical condition and assess its severity, draw up a plan for the necessary diagnostic tests, will be able to interpret the results of the tests, link them with symptoms and other clinical studies, perform primary (complaints, case history, objective investigation) and secondary (interpreting test results) differential diagnosis of the patient‘s symptoms;
He/she will be able to formulate an appropriate treatment plan for the individual patient and discuss it with the patient and his / her relatives, will be able to assess the potential drug interactions and potential side effects, the risk of the surgery and the effectiveness of the designated treatment.
He/she will be able to recognize emergency medical conditions, to provide first and initial reanimation assistance in accordance with current recommendations, to provide initial assistance in case of trauma, to be able to cure when emergency assistance is needed. He/she will be able to do or know how to perform practical skills according to residency study program.
The resident will be able to assess the risk to the patient's health and apply appropriate and rational measures to mitigate these risks, apply infection control measures, assess occupational risk to their own health and take measures to prevent this risk.
He/she will be able to assess the limits of their competencies and, if necessary, apply for help, act in the new situations and adapt to them, act independently, solve problems and make decisions, communicate and work in a team together with specialists of other fields, be able to organize and plan. The resident will be able to plan and conduct scientific research.
Activities of teaching and learning:
seminars, consultations, group discussions, practical activities, reading of scientific literature, refiling daily activities notebook.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The interim and final assesment, exams, practical work assessment, defending of final thesis.

Residency studies last 7 years. Course includes 462 ECTS credits. Practice studies take not less than 75 percent of hours. Personal activity takes not less than 50 percents from the theoretical lectures.

4. Burns, plastic and reconstructive surgery
5. Anesthesiology, intensive therapy, extracorporeal circulation and assist devices in cardiothoracic surgery.
6. Clinical cardiology
7. Interventional cardiology
8. Intensive therapy in cardiology
9. Echocardiography
10. Urgent medicine
11. Vascular surgery
12. Ischemic heart disease and it‘s surgical treatment
13. Heart valve pathology and it‘s surgical treatment
14. Surgical treatment of congenital heart deseases
15. Aortic diseases, pericardial diseases, heart tumors and it‘s surgical treatment
16. Heart transplantation and auxilary blood flow, cardiac assist systems 17. Thoracic general surgery
18. Thoracic urgent surgery

Specialisations:
The residency programe of the Cardiothoracic surgery allows to deepen theoretical knowledge and gain practical skills of resident in the selected stand.
Specializations; resident will be able to choose his / her studies area, i.e. deepen knowledge in the following specialized programs:
1. Cardiac surgery
2. Chest surgery.
Optional courses:
The resident will be able to choose between the following modules: 1. Molecular pathology
2. Radiology in cardiothoracic surgery
3. Echocardiography
4. Interventional cardiology
Distinctive features of a study programme:
The program has its own uniqueness. There has not been prepared any cardiothoracic residents that has such a deep theoretical and practical skills in any other university of the country.
Professionals will be able to perform more sophisticated procedures that require a greater amount of knowledge and experience: lung and heart- lung transplantations, complex lung surgery, minimally invasive and robotic heart and lung operations etc.
The multiprofessional preparation system will enable to bring the level of treatment of patients with cardiothoracic surgical diseases closer to the level of leading health care countries.

Access to professional activity:
Postgraduate cardiothoracic surgeon is able to work in local healthcare institutions, which can provide cardiac, thoracic or cardiothoracic surgery services.
The license to work as a cardiothoracic surgeon is provided by State Health Care Accreditation Agency under the Ministry of Health having medical diploma, certificate of internship and certificate of residency completion present. Postgraduate cardiothoracic surgeon is able to work with scientific research or educational work in medical universities.
Access to further study:
After completing the residency it will be a possibility to deep a knowledge in PhD studies.
