Summary of the Profile
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The main objective of the study programme is to educate Bachelors of Forestry equipped with extensive theoretical knowledge, trained to think critically and creatively, skilled in planning, developing and administering urban forest and forest recreation areas.
The first partial objective - to inculcate in students humanity views, communication skills, responsibility sense, need for social activity.
Second partial objective - to learn the students to understand forest problems, forest purposes and forest use in the context of ecological meaning and ecological importance of forests, to see the forest as an cultural attraction as well, to become aware of different approaches to the forest in rural and urban areas due to specific programmes for multiple use and users, suitable forestry institutions and specific strategies for collaboration with the urban and rural stake holders.
1. Possession of mathematical, meteorological and chemical methods for better understanding of forest ecosystem.
2. Comprehensive and integrated understanding of urban ecosystem, its components and functions, including the role of forest and green areas.
3. Comprehensive and integrated skills in management of urban forest and green areas for the purposes of public recreation under environmentally sound conditions.
4. Skills in planning scientific and/or technological research projects and in interpretation of the research results based on statistical analysis and other applied research methods.
5. Skills in data collecting and analysis related to forest and park ecosystem resources, social needs, public interests, impact of anthropogenic pressure.
6. Skills in identifying herbaceous and woody plants, fungi, insects, birds and beasts, soil types, forest types, ecological problems.
7. Skills in planning, organizing and evaluating the forest infrastructure development for recreational, purposes, for green space management activities, integrated with modern technologies and tools.
8. Skills in managing private companies and public institutions.
9. Skills in communicating the stake holders concerning urban and recreational forestry, in presenting the results of the activities carried out.
10. Skills in selection, evaluation and use of scientific, legal and other special sources of information for the purposes of professional practice.
11. Skills in taking responsibility for own actions and activities and those of subordinates in accordance with the principles of professional ethics.
12. Skills in self-assessment of the own professional activities and in planning of the own learning.
13. Skills in understanding the own moral responsibility for professional activities, carried out for social, economic, environmental and cultural development of the welfare in urban areas.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Contact work consists of lectures, seminars, laboratory work, exercises, practices, consulting, tests, exams, supervising the final work. Contact work can be carried out by correspondence as well.
Student self-dependant learning activities include preparation for seminars, laboratory work, tests and exams, taking individual and group tasks, independent scientific research work, coursework, final work preparation and delivery.
Teaching methods applied promote students' creative skills. They include debate, discussion, mind map, expert method, student presentations and approach to work in pairs and in groups, case studies of the real problems, development scenarios, practice in the workplace etc. The students are inspired for active participation in the lectures: after some introduction by the lecturer, they are supposed to read the study material before the following lectures, to formulate some questions, to speak to some topics, to participate in the discussion.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Studies of the subject end with an exam. Exam may be taken in written or oral form. Before the exam session students are required to complete the laboratory, control, exercise activities, course projects and other forms of self-learning. The final note for a study subject consists of the knowledge evaluation during the exam (50-60%) and other work evaluation.
Subject performance evaluation methods are as follows: problematic issues, tests, short answer demanding questions, questions to answer using the open literature, oral questions, individual notification, the team (small group), prepared the report presentation, poster, abstract, problem tasks laboratory or practical work deliverables, professional practice statements presentation, presentation of the results of teaching practice, role-play (performance), delivery, presentation of various projects, scientific presentation of the results of various reviews etc.
Students are supposed to take one study subject from each of 4 optional subject groups (totally 12 ECTS):
Group 1: Fundamentals of Game Management; Game Breeding in Captivity; Arboristic; Ornamental Dendrology; Plantations for Urban Infrastructure.
Group 2: Planning of Protected Areas; Fundamentals of Water Management; Heritage Management; Environment Protection Projects; Man Ecology; Management of Environment Protection; Protection of Biodiversity.
Group 3: Forestry Economics; Private Forest Business; Private Forest Plantation Business; Forest Products; Computerics in Forestry; Forest Bioenergy.
Group 4: Forest Pedagogics; Conflicts Management.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
Students have the opportunity to study individual courses abroad under the Erasmus programme.
