The aim of the Bachelor program of Microbiology is to educate highly qualified, motivated, creative-minded specialists who are able to work in scientific institutions and, in biotechnology, microbiology-related companies. To develop the interest in various scientific problems in molecular microbiology, to have the understanding and capability to apply them in biotechnology, medicine, food industry, agriculture, environmental safety. To maintain professional competence through life-lasting learning.
Learning outcomes:
Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of the subjects studied, logically convey knowledge, to demonstrate an understanding of the studied subject's relation with other fields of science; to be able to systematize, describe and to explain the information received, to be able to critically analyze the obtained knowledge and adapt to different challenges; to demonstrate an understanding of experimental design, processing of results; to be able to work independently and in a team, to take responsibility for the decisions.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Lectures, laboratory work, practical training, seminars, consultations, self-sufficient study.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The main form of evaluation is an examination. However, courses units may be evaluated by the pass/fail evaluation as well. Every course unit is concluded with either a written or written-oral examination or pass/fail evaluation. Student's knowledge and general performance during the exam are evaluated using a grading scale from 1(very poor) to 10(excellent), or by pass or fail evaluation in the cases when pass/fail evaluation is foreseen as a final evaluation of the course unit.
Study subjects (modules), practical training:
The study program consists of 2 parts: the general education university courses - 15 credits, the Microbiology study direction courses - 225 credits. The mid-term research and report - 10 credits, professional practice - 15 credits and the final bachelor research and report - 15 credits are included in the program. Distinctive features of a study programme:
VU LSC study program Microbiology is the only program in Lithuania and Baltic states educating the specialists in Microbiology. The graduates of this program will have unique knowledge for the work with microorganisms in all the fields of industry, medicine, biotechnology, research.
Access to professional activity:
Graduates will be able to work in food processing (meat, milk, beer, bread, wine, cheese) plants, biopharmaceutical, cosmetics, biofuels, and biogas production, wastewater treatment, soil treatment technology companies, bio-profile research institutes and laboratories, scientific and clinical diagnostic and private sector laboratories, environmental structures, municipal and corporate offices, etc.
Access to further study:
Bachelors will be able to continue their studies in microbiology, biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, and microbiology with other biotechnology or related master programs in Lithuania and abroad.
