Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To prepare specialists with linguistic education who will have the fundamentals in linguistics, who will gain communicative competences in English and another foreign language (Swedish, Spanish or Chinese) that respond the requirements of modern global labour market, who will acquire skills to analyse and explore the studied languages in the intercultural and interdisciplinary settings, who will gain the basics of translation and who will be able to use the gained knowledge and skills to effectively communicate in two foreign languages.
Learning outcomes:
Knowledge, application of knowledge
1. Fundamental knowledge in general education, fundamental knowledge about the studied languages and theoretical knowledge in linguistics.
2. The ability to analyze and apply the fundamental knowledge in the use of English and another foreign language environment.
3. Knowledge of the language units, language structure, language levels and ways of expression.
4. Knowledge on text analysis and interpretation, principles and methods of text development, processing and transformation.
5. Knowledge on culture of countries of the studied languages the principles of intercultural communication and cooperation.
Ability to carry out research
1. Ability to conduct research on language units, language structure, language levels and establish their relationships and patterns of use.
2. Ability to apply linguistic research methods in interdisciplinary contexts and discourses.
Special skills
1. Ability to proficiently use the English language (level C2 - Mastery or Proficiency); ability to independently use another foreign language (Swedish, Spanish or Chinese) (level B2 - Vantage or Upper Intermediate).
2. Ability to create and translate a variety of spoken and written English texts, ability to use stylistic, rhetoric tools to assess a text.
3. Ability to use strategies and methods of translation, exploit different information sources, apply translation procedures in practice and communicate effectively in multicultural environment.
Social skills.
1. Ability to logically and clearly express thoughts speak effectively, focus on general cultural and social processes, communicate and collaborate in an international environment with the understanding of cultural differences on social interactions.

1. Ability to develop the competence of learning to learn, i.e. the ability to individually plan the learning process, choose the direction of improvement and self- education.

Activities of teaching and learning:
Innovative teaching and learning methods as well as a digital approach to study process are applied:
• Receptive methods: academic lecture, didactic conversation, demonstration of pictures, slides, films, use of literature sources, teaching materials.
• Productive methods: oral and written presentations, verification conversation (questioning, colloquium, credit test, exam) based on the tasks, help to receive the feedback.
• Exercises completed at seminars: contextual exercises (giving comments, explanations), creativity exercises (raising scientific problem and hipotheses, verification and proof) based on mutual work of a teacher and a student.
• Euristic methods: euristic conversation, discussion, logical proof, brainstorming, information search make a student to actively participate in discussions, share experience, develop critical thinking.
Research methods: work with scientific literature, research results (presentation, summary, etc.) develop the ability of a student to carry out scientific research individually.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Assessment methods employed are: monitoring, interactive tests, oral questioneer, work during seminars, analysis of literature and scientific sources, assessment of an essay on a chosen topic, assessment of research results (presentation, abstract), assessment of research and creative work, open discussion of project results, team work, colloquium, exam. Each course unit has its own assessment criteria whic are related to study goals.
Assessment of students is based on a ten-point system and the system of the accumulative grade. The assessment of individual work of a student during the term is a constituent part of the final grade.
Individual work tasks, the system and time of their assessment are presented in course unit description cards.
The study program ends with presentation of Master’s degree thesis and open defence of the thesis during which the competences of a student are assessed.

Study subjects (modules), practical training:
The study programme consists of three parts (total 240 ECTS credits):
1) General education study modules (15 ECTS).
2) Study field modules (219 ECTS): English language modules make 72 ECTS, another foreign language modules make 60 ECTS, Linguistics makes 57 ECTS, Internship makes 15 ECTS, BA Final Thesis makes 15 ECTS.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
The study programme combines fundamental linguistic studies and applied studies both in the English language and another foreign language (Swedish, Spanish or Chinese) and aims to prepare specialists with the knowledge in general linguistics and having communicative competences in two foreign languages: English and Swedish or Spanish or Chinese.

Access to professional activity:
Graduates of the programme will be proficient in English and another foreign language (Swedish, Spanish or Chinese). They will be able to work in national and international business companies, public sector agencies and other businesses where excellent competencies in at least two foreign languages is a priority.
Access to further study:
Access to second cycle studies (Graduate studies) in the field of Humanities or Social Sciences.
