Summary of the Profile

General Description:

Objective(s) of a study programme:

The interdisciplinary study programme aims at preparing highly qualified multidisciplinary philology specialists, with high level knowledge of German literary language (level C1) and able to apply their knowledge of professional language in various selected areas (business, tourism, law, administration, media, advertising, technology). These specialists will have acquired competence in English language (level C1) and one more EU language (French, Italian, Spanish or Swedish) competence in level B1, as well as fundamentals of linguistics, translation, intercultural communication, literaturology, analysis and writing of subject-specific texts; abilities to translate economic, political, legal, advertising, technical, administrative and publicistic texts, as well as written professional correspondence. They will have a good understanding of the German history, culture, society, peculiarities of politics and economics; they will be able to analyse the relations between Germany and Lithuania.

Learning outcomes:

Graduates of the BA study programme will be able to:

1. Write and speak German fluently (level C1).

2. Write and speak English (level C1).

3. Write and speak another EU language (French, Italian, Spanish or Swedish) in level B1.

4. Give an overview and explain the theoretical provisions and methodological peculiarities of German linguistics, literaturology and science of translation.

5. Discuss and analyse political, economic, cultural occurrences, historical events.

Use subject-specific language with respect to the peculiarities of intercultural communication; distinguish and explain typical features of subject-specific professional languages.

7. Describe and analyse the specifics and importance of intercultural communication when implementing intercultural projects and developing multilateral professional and cultural relations.

8. Collect primary written, visual and oral sources while using various tools of data gathering; use databases, process the collected information.

9. Analyse, classify scientific material, use methods of scientific analysis, summarize the obtained results, formulate reasoned conclusions; present the scientific material according to the requirements of the academic discourse.

10. Translate subject-specific texts from German to Lithuanian, while sensibly choosing the linguistic expressions and methods of translation.

11. Create spoken and written texts of different purpose, with respect to stylistic and genre specifics of the text/discourse.

12. Communicate to professionals and the broader society when solving professional tasks, professionally presenting and promoting information about the German speaking countries.

13. Create and sustain professional relations, represent a company or organisation in various kinds of events, fairs and exhibitions; take up the role of a moderator in communication with foreign business partners.

14. Effectively communicate and collaborate in a team, when solving problems and conflicts.

15. Gain business abilities, enabling to flexibly adapt to the fast-paced market state and allowing to effectively act in a professional environment.

Effectively plan and organise the activity, execute the assigned tasks in a timely manner and take responsibility.

Lectures, seminars, discussions, consultations, group work, projects, case studies, self studies, term papers, final thesis.

Methods of assessment of learning achievements:

The assessment of student knowledge is based on a cumulative grading system. Students have a mid-term exam (20-30 per cent), and a final exam (50 per cent), as well as seminar and other individual work assessments such as case studies, project activities, presentations etc. During the semester. Evaluating rating scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 10 representing the highest level of achievement, 1-4 indicating fail. Exams are conducted in written form.

Graduates of the programme will become specialists, who will be able to work as:

• Specialists of German language and experts in politics, economics and society of German speaking countries, intermediating between the Lithuanian state organisations and EU institutions and business companies, while planning and implementing international business, media, marketing, culture and other projects;
• Specialists of culture of the German speaking countries, who can work in culture, education, science and public communication organizations, cultural centers and are able to start and sustain professional dialogue between Lithuanian and German culture;
• Language teachers, who are able to work in schools of informal language education;
• Translators from German to Lithuanian;
• Tourist guides, employed by tourism agencies.
Access to further study:

The graduates will be able to continue their studies in a Master‘s programme „German business language and communication“, as well as other Master‘s programmes in the field of linguistics, literary, translation studies, journalism, education, law, economics.
