Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The objective of the study programme "Architecture and Urban Design"
1) to award the university education of Master in Architecture of arts' area, and 2) to prepare qualified architects who would be able to apply professional knowledge in practice, and to independently develop the knowledge obtain. Such specialist must be able to perform methodologically based architectural - urban research in a constantly changing natural and anthropogenic environment, and to apply conclusions of research properly in his/ her professional activity.

Knowledge and its application:
• Systematic theoretical, actual and methodological knowledge in areas of fundamental, social, humanitarian, technology science and art.
• Knowledge of different points of view towards the city, and possibilities of its development.
• Knowledge of Architecture, Urban planning and visual art history and theory.
• Knowledge of specifics of urban development of cities in conditions of globalization and market economy.
• Knowledge of main principles of urban development, instruments and means of planning activity.
• Knowledge of operation principles of building constructions, engineering structures and systems.
• Knowledge of city communication systems and engineering infrastructure.
• Knowledge of global and local urban development practices, their achievements, and methodologies.
Research skills:
• Abilities to work with modern digital informational systems, ability to work with basic software, ability to apply digital computer methods.
• Abilities to analyse and assess urban processes and their influence on social (formation of politics, identity and self-image) processes of the society.
• Ability to work with data bases, also to apply methods and means to perform pre-project research.
• Ability to constantly observe and analyse phenomena of modern art, architecture, and urban planning, to search independently for, collect and process different data.
• Ability to deliver work results to different audiences, and to present results of research.
Subject-specific skills:
• Ability to co-ordinate creative ideas and enterprise with community values (inheritance, environmental protection, etc.)
• Ability to set down thoughts in writing, plan and organise own urban planning activity and present properly own ideas and work results.
• Ability to prepare a program of a planned object, to solve planning tasks in an integrated manner.
• To distinguish planning of territories as a legal procedure from a professional urbanist's activity.
• Ability to apply international, European, and Lithuanian standards to architectural and urban planning, to know well the essence of a structure of a legal basis of architectural and territorial planning.

• Ability to communicate with specialists of other fields.
• Ability to evaluate problematic situations and risks, to foresee changes and consequences.
• Ability to integrate an architectural and urban project into a cultural, social, and physical environment.

• Abilities for constant learning and self-development, time planning, organisation of own and team activities.
• Ability to raise professional competencies life-long, to generate new ideas, express and accept constructive critics.
Activities of teaching and learning:
The following are applied to creative-professional subjects:
• lessons and discussions (oriented towards identification of a problem, analysis, and explanation);
• research methods and generalization of results of research;
• individual consultations (alternative solutions of a social, cultural, urban-architectural problem, specific case analysis);
• presentation of a progress and result of an individual creative work (personal or team-work), discussion, critical analysis and discussions;
• seminars and creative practice being carried out in the beginning of a semester in order to reveal better the topic under discussion, and in the end of each semester during public discussion of the creative work, critical analysis, and opposition.
• workshops (team-work), carried out following current topic issues (visits of outstanding foreign specialists and their workshops);
• participation in competitions of architecture and other public events;
• professional practice in companies of architectural planning to deepen expertise of a speciality, independent professional activity skills, to obtain a possibility to get acquainted with the structure, functions of a planning company, and employment possibilities.

~ 80 % of the scope of studies is based on these methods. For theoretical subjects which aim at getting knowledge, the following activities are applied: problematic lectures, seminar, methods of control and final report by a wider application of an accumulative mark. ~ 20 % of the scope of studies is based on these methods.
Methods of assessment of learning achievementss:
Evaluation of results is carried out on the principles of soundness, objectivity, consistence and transparency. In theoretical subjects, informal verbal evaluation is applied (colloquium, seminar, discussions), written evaluation (test, paper work, exam). In creative (speciality) subjects, a professional evaluation is applied (closure/ sketch), evaluation is formed (informal evaluation during consultations, intermediary review), and final general evaluation (course paper/ final project) is made.
Application of the knowledge obtained in practice, artistic-aesthetic, engineering-technical preparation, ability to learn and work independently is evaluated. Accumulative evaluation system is applied - tasks of independent work are being evaluated on separate aspects, and the final mark is put by calculating a general arithmetic average. Evaluation is carried out during a public discussion, and its provisions and criteria are presented in the beginning of each semester.

Elective subjects of special training (18 credits): Block of subjects of general university studies and/ or other field subjects set by VDA, is designed for development of wider world-view, intellect and erudition.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
UA studies' programme is designed for a specialized preparation of architects as no such specialists are being prepared in Lithuania yet.
The programme is designated for the main field studies (Architecture), and is oriented towards preparation of a qualified architect and creative artist at the same time. After a successful completion of the studies, graduates acquire the qualifications set forth in the Law on the Recognition of Regulated Professional Qualifications and Master's degree in Arts (Architecture) which allows running the architect's or equal activity.

Graduates may:
• work in state and municipality institutions of architectural planning and construction;
• make plans of buildings and interior;
• prepare projects of urban complexes and landscape;
• prepare feasibility studies of development of urban structures;
• prepare territory planning documents (general, detailed, and special plans);
• prepare heritage protection work projects;
• create own business of architectural and urban planning;
• take civil servant positions at state and public administration institutions in the fields of architecture and urban development;
• make expert assessment of architecture and urban objects;
• run other activity related to artistic forming of environment.
Access to further studies:
The studies may be proceeded on a post-graduate level, i.e. aimed to achieve Doctor's degree which allows working in fields of research and pedagogy in a higher school, university or other institution of education. Studies may be proceeded in other areas and fields in Lithuanian and foreign universities:
