Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To prepare social workers, whose activity is based on the body of knowledge, skills, values, and experience, which allows the formation of key social worker’s social and personal competencies (social problem diagnosis and information, social support organisation and change management, interpersonal relationship formation and communication, mediation and counselling, reflection and supervision, professional development and appropriate representation of the social worker profession).
Learning outcomes:
1.1. Will know the basics of social sciences, humanities and other sciences’ theories, and will apply them to social work practice.
1.2. Will have the latest knowledge of social work theory and methods, social worker’s profession development in the country, theories about human behavior in the social environment, social issues and their evidence, ethical principles, basics of academic research methodology, human rights and social justice, national social security, social work planning, interprofessional collaboration; will be able to apply this body of knowledge in social work practice and research.
2.1. Will be able to perform practice-oriented empirical research.
2.2. Will be able to apply the results of the research for solving specific social problems, developing professional activities, implementing social work innovations.
3.1. Will be able to identify and assess the needs and strengths of a person, group, community (further - customer), to plan, implement and evaluate the process of social support and its results, using various methods of social work, creating the relationship of mutual trust with the customer, representing clients' rights and interests, invoking internal and environmental resources, motivating and enabling the customer for self-help.
3.2. Will be able to develop and implement customer support plans, projects, will assess the quality of social services.
3.3. Will be able to collaborate with representatives of various institutions when providing social work services and seeking to enable individuals, families and communities, thus contributing to social welfare.
3.4. Will be able to analyze and explain the impact of social policy on consolidation of human rights and reduction of social exclusion.
3.5. Will be able to follow the principles of social justice, human rights, social work values and ethics in their practice.
4.1. Will be able to communicate and collaborate, creating a complete connection with the client, group, community, colleagues, and work in a team while assuming social responsibility.
4.2. Will be able smoothly and forcibly express themselves orally and in written, to communicate effectively in Lithuanian, foreign, and the sign language for the professional aims.
4.3. Will be able to discuss topical professional issues in order to develop and strengthen the social work profession.
5.1. Will be able to evaluate and reflect on their professional activity critically, being aware of the importance of the lifelong learning.
5.2. Will be able to make independent decisions in specific situations using their expertise.
5.3. Will be able to gather and organize information, use information technology, and appropriately handle confidential information.
5.4. Will create social work profession’s image, will take care of the profession’s status.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Teaching and learning activities are oriented towards the development of students’ personal, social, research, and special competencies, through application of cognitive, knowledge conceptualization, action, individual learning empowering, investigation and self-control methods: interactive/involving lectures and workshops, creative tasks, seminars, individual and group work, conception mapping, learning by doing, reflective diaries, essay writing, experimental situational learning, problem and project learning, and other methods oriented towards development of practical problem analysis skills, discussion, case studies, independent work, reflections, what are based on positive professional self-development and self-awareness. The methods for students’ individual work, tasks, and hours for consulting are provided.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The assessment of learning outcomes is a part of studies’ process. The assessment is carried out through all semester and at the end of the course - during the exam session. The acquired knowledge and skills are assessed on a ten-point scale. The cumulative assessment is applied. The outcomes of the study programme subjects are assessed during the mid-term assignments (written surveys, tests, essays, control works, creative tasks, projects, experience diaries, portfolios, etc.). The grades from mid-term assignments are collected during the course within the semester and compound the part of the final grade from the course. Each subject studies conclude with the exam or with the assessment of student’s individual work (project, practice evaluation, etc.). The final assessment is allowed only if midterm assignments are complete. The final grade of the course is compounded from mid-term assignments grades and exam grades. Each part has its own percentage provided in the subject description.

Study field subjects - Introduction to studies and professional ethics, Social work theoretical basics, General and developmental psychology Social policy and security, Information technologies in social work, Social psychology, Counselling in social work, Social work with persons with special needs, Lithuanian sign language basics, Sociology, Social work with a person, Human and children’s rights, Cultural diversity in social work, Social development, Social work with groups, Social work with family, Social research methodology, Economics and entrepreneurship basics, Social projects/programs preparation and administration, Social rehabilitation and integration, Mediation introduction, Social work and volunteering in the community, Management and leadership.
Supervised Practice - Educational social work practice, Social worker’s assistant practice, Social work practice under the supervision of a mentor, Final independent social work practice.
The study program concludes with Thesis work.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
Students have an option to choose alternatively the subjects of the programme according to their interests, client group, etc. (by choosing the modules of specialization).

Graduates will be able to work as social workers in public and private social security, education, health care, law enforcement agencies: social welfare departments, child protection services, day care centers for children, people with disabilities, the older and aged persons, boarding homes, family homes, orphanages, social care homes, hospitals, rehabilitation departments, schools, prisons, various non-public organizations or communities and etc.
Access to further study:
Graduates can continue their studies in Lithuanian and foreign institutions of higher education, programmes dedicated to social sciences in the field of social work, education science or sociology.
