Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The main objective of the study programme is to prepare motivated, able to think creatively plant biotechnology specialists familiar with plant biotechnological processes and equipped with the knowledge and skills allowing to understand the interaction of all elements of the technological process and able to apply the knowledge in the development and implementation of plant biotechnology projects.
The first sub-objective is development of humanistic orientation, critical thinking, social activeness, freedom of communication and responsible selection of values – characteristics and skills essential for both professional and self-development.
The second sub-objective is to provide the fundamental and specific knowledge in the field of biotechnology and related sciences, develop technological knowledge and competencies that allow analytical solutions and modelling of the simulated plant biotechnology problems, be able to apply practically biotechnological product development and implementation methodologies.
The third sub-objective is to provide comprehensive knowledge and develop skills for complex understanding of biotechnology sciences and expand graduates employment opportunities.
Learning outcomes:
1. A graduate of the programme is able to use Lithuanian and foreign language knowledge in business discussions and for writing professional correspondence;
2. Having gained fundamental and applied knowledge, he is able to analyse bioprocesses, select analytical and modelling methods, use/apply specific equipment and means;
3. A graduate is able to find and apply professional and scientific information in the data bases and other information sources, plan and carry out plant biotechnology experiments, to evaluate the data and draw conclusions of the experiments;
4. Having acquired the understanding of the process of biotechnology chains interaction and ethic, environmental and work safety aspects of biotechnology activity, selected biotechnology product development processes, he is able to launch projects that stimulate competitive enterprise activity, give advice on biotechnology issues;
5. By applying complex biotechnology means, a graduate is able to use bioprocesses and possibilities of living organisms to create and produce specific products.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Teaching (lectures, laboratory works, practicums, seminars, traineeships, internships), learning (team work, individual work, preparation for laboratory works/practicums, seminars, internships, exam), various innovative teaching/learning methods and interactive study means, visual material used at lectures: information delivery, presentations (that are e-mailed to students after lectures), case study (problem based study method), brainstorming, expert method, discussion, reflection etc.; visual material used at laboratory works/ practicums/ seminars/ traineeships/ internships: brainstorming, group work, individual and team assignments, discussions, self-reflections methods and other methods in accordance with the specific features of each study subject. Student-centred individual work based on assignments and teamwork, paying special attention to problem solving and critical thinking.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Answering orally and in writing, individual and team presentations, presentation of traineeship results, presentation of internship report etc.
Students are evaluated during the semester and exam session. The method of cumulative assessment is applied: learning achievements are assessed by mid-term assignments. After students have mastered several topics of the study subject, mid-term assessment is carried out by evaluating their assignments, acquired knowledge and skills (control works, practical assignments etc.). During the exam session all the acquired knowledge and skills are evaluated. Learning achievements assessment form during the exam session is exam. The knowledge of a student during exam is evaluated on the scale from 1 to 10. The final mark comprises mid-term assessment evaluations and exam evaluation. Framework of cumulative assessment is indicated in subject description.
