Summary of the Profile
General Description:
Objective(s) of the study program:
To train national security and defence professionals well aware of the internal and external threats and challenges faced by the modern state, able to analyse them and make appropriate threat management and prevention decisions while working or serving in public security organisations or institutions.
Learning outcomes:
Knowledge and its application
Graduates of the study programme are familiar with the scientific theories of national and public security, the specifics of their application in Lithuania and other Western countries, and are able to apply this knowledge in practice; they are familiar with the national security systems of Lithuania, other Western countries and neighbouring countries, their management, the role of international organisations and agreements in ensuring Lithuania's and regional security; they are familiar with the history of warfare, war theory, and the legal and economic contexts of relevance to the military officer's profession, and are able to make decisions within this context.
Capacity to conduct research
Graduates are able to conduct applied research using quantitative and qualitative methods applied in social sciences, independently formulating research tasks relevant to the national defence system and its management, guided by the latest research findings.
Special abilities
The trained specialists are able to analyse threats to national security, select appropriate measures to prevent threats and ensure security, or make decisions taking into account the resources (financial, information, human, infrastructure) and capabilities available to the organisation, the state and allies, and to deploy capabilities and capacities in a swift and efficient manner; they are able to lead servicemen and sub-units in peacetime and emergencies, using a wide range of team-oriented work methods and communicating information efficiently.
Social skills
Military officers, graduates of the programme, are able to work in teams to plan and execute joint projects, take responsibility for their own and their colleagues' performance, transfer knowledge, act in accordance with the principles of professional ethics and citizenship; communicate in a professional manner with specialists from Lithuanian and foreign security and defence organisations, representatives of general public, international organisations, and the media in different cultural environments using correct Lithuanian and foreign language.
Personal skills
Graduates are able to carry out their professional activities in a creative manner as individuals and a team, while critically assessing the acquired knowledge and experience, and by being aware of their moral responsibility for their actions and their impact; they are able to continuously update their knowledge and skills and independently collect and analyse data required for the successful completion of their professional tasks, with proper citation and respect for copyright and other intellectual property rights.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Lectures, practice work, individual work, laboratory work, reading literature, solving exercises, literature review and presentations, analysis of scientific sources, practical tasks, seminars, team tasks
(projects), visits to organisations or visits by representatives of organisations, final thesis project, internship.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Written exams, presentations, case studies, course papers, individual assignments, internship report, public defence of Bachelor’s thesis.

Study subjects (modules), practical training:
The subjects in the field of study (including specialisations study subjects, the internship and thesis) total 155 ECTS.
General university study subjects consists of 55 ECTS.
Distinctive features of the study program:
The study programme provides graduates with both the rank of the second lieutenant and a bachelor diploma in public security.

Access to professional activity:
The Bachelor’s degree in Public Security enables graduates to pursue officer career. For those graduates who are not able to continue military service in the Lithuanian Armed Forces due to various reasons, the acquired qualification enables them to apply for civil service at the Lithuanian statutory bodies, namely national security and defence institutions of national defence and public security systems.
Access to further study:
Successfully completed the Bachelor’s degree in defence studies will be prepared to continue their studies at Academy or other universities for a Master’s degree in defence or other related fields.
