Summary of the Profile

Objective(s) of a study programme: the purpose of Musicology Study program is to prepare musicologists practitioners, experts of music involved in the cultural life of the country, who are able to analyze and to assess music and its phenomena in historical, theoretical, cultural and social aspects, and to present issues of musical life in the context of changing means of communication and social environment.
Learning outcomes: ability to think analytically and critically; ability to work and to learn individually in regard to continuous changes of musical creation, science and cultural life; ability to search for the information in various sources, to process, to analyze, to systemize and to interpret it originally; ability to express thoughts smoothly, and to reason them and to represent publicly; ability to use theoretical and historical knowledge effectively, revealing the principles of music development and its stylistic variety; ability to carry out a professional research of musical creation or phenomena and to choose the proper form to present research results; knowledge of the forms of musicological activity and ability to use theoretical knowledge in practical professional activity; ability to participate in musical life actively, to promote musical culture in society.
Activities of teaching and learning: lectures in groups, seminars, training, practicum, practice, observation and analysis, scientific literature studies, independent work, professional practice, preparation of a research.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements: exam, credit, intermediate assessment, presentation of paper works, defense of bachelor thesis. Assessment of examinations is carried out by using 10 point grading scale. The credit grading options comprise Pass / Fail assessing options.
Study subjects (modules), practical training: Subjects of study field, Professional (occupational) practice, Profound study subjects, General university subjects, Optional subjects.
Distinctive features of a study programme: significant opportunities to model the unique content of the studies and to model an individual career by choosing subjects and its alternatives that corresponds individual needs are provided for the students of the Study Program. The opportunities provided create the conditions to choose an activity of music critic, reviewer and analyst of musical life, organizer of musical events, lecturer, editor of musical broadcasts, etc. in the future. Also, to continue studying Master’s degree and to deepen competences needed for musicologist scientist.
Access to professional activity: graduates are able to work in cultural institutions, editorial offices of magazines and newspapers, radio, television; concert institutions (the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society, etc.).
Access to further study: Bachelor students of Musicology Study Program can continue studying Master’s degree in the humanitarian study area, in the study field of History and Theory of Arts.
