Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To prepare nurses capable of performing functions requiring knowledge of nursing science and practice and universal theoretical preparation, scientific research skills, also reaching personal, family and community health, demonstrating critical thinking, social responsibility, autonomy, teamwork ability, holistic approach, science-based practical activities.
Learning outcomes:
The graduate of the program is able to:
1. apply modern nursing and other scientific knowledge taking care of individuals, families, and the community on the basis of advanced nursing practice;
2. work effectively in an interdisciplinary team, planning and delivering nursing, applying professional skills, knowledge and practical experience;
3. adopt a holistic approach in teaching individuals, families, and groups about healthy lifestyle and disease prevention;
4. provide first aid and emergency medical care within the scope of own competence, in cases of life-threatening conditions and injuries, using the latest medical technologies;
5. independently organize and provide assistance to persons in need of care and to their carers;
6. ensure and evaluate the quality of care, demonstrating autonomy, professional and personal responsibility;
7. comprehensively communicate and collaborate with other health care specialists on professional issues, using management and leadership skills;
8. apply a lifelong learning strategy based on personal and professional development in the field of nursing.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Different study methods are used: traditional – traditional and interactive lectures, seminars, and modern – innovative problem-based teaching methods: role-playing games, case studies, thought/concept map, expert method.
Research skills are enhanced through individual consultations with the supervisor, performing tasks of analysis and synthesis.
Clinical subjects are studied in small groups in simulation intervention laboratories; using moulages, medical and nursing means, equipment, preparing manipulations and various procedures; analyzing clinical cases, making decisions on real-life nursing problems.
The practice takes place in real workplaces: hospitals of various profiles, health care centers. During practice, patients’ nursing is performed, their nursing is analyzed and patient care plans are made.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Ten grade and gathered evaluation system is applied. The semester’s individual work tasks are evaluated by grades; the final grade is given during the examination session while multiplying particular grades by the level coefficient and summing the products. The final exam grade must be at least 50 percent of the final mark.

The scope of the program is 240 ECTS. General subjects of university studies – 21 credits. Study Subject Group (219 credits): Introduction to Nursing Studies and Professional Ethics, Anatomy and Physiology, Pathological Anatomy and Physiology, Biophysics and Radiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Dietetics, Wellness Education, Health Care Management and Administration, Interventional Nursing, Clinical Decision Making in Imitational Nursing Care Model, Nursing Care Quality and Patient Safety, Evidence and Research: Approaches to Design and Methods, Course Paper I / II, Community Nursing, Obsterics – Gynaecology Nursing, Nursing Issues in Child Health Care, Geriatric – Palliative Nursing Issues, Mental Health and Patient Nursing, Surgical Nursing, Therapeutic Nursing, Emergency Care and Intensive Care Nursing; practice – 86 credits. 27 credits – in the field of cosmetology or radiology.
The study programme ends with a qualification examination and preparation, defense and assessment of the final thesis.

A student can choose 15 credits from elective subjects offered in the programme (speciality).
Distinctive features of a study programme:
The study programme is characterized by internationality and close cooperation with foreign partners. International experience by choosing part-time studies abroad (up to 1 semester) through exchange programmes is encouraged. In the 240-credit programme, 86 credits are given for practice.

Access to professional activity:
Graduates of the study programme are awarded the professional qualification of a general practice nurse. The State Health Care Accreditation Agency under the Ministry of Health in accordance with the Law on Nursing Practice and Midwifery Practice of the Republic of Lithuania (Official Gazette, 2001, No. 62-2224; 2009, No. 89-3801) and the Regulations on Licensing of Nursing Practices approved by the Minister of Health certifies the General Nursing Practice License that approves the right to practice nursing.
Access to further study:
The 6th level qualification provides the opportunity to continue the 7th level (Master's) studies in Lithuania and abroad. After gaining the professional qualification of a general practice nurse, a graduate may continue his/her learning through non-formal education/specialization programmes.
