Summary of the Profile

Objective(s) of a study programme:

On the basis of achievements in international level fundamental and applied interdisciplinary science and technologies, to train Bachelor of Rehabilitation, specialist with a professional qualification of the Rehabilitologist of the disabled who will be able to work with persons with different disabilities (movement, vision, hearing, mental, etc.) in the areas of their physical, psychological and social rehabilitation, using various special means and methods of physical activity aiming at reducing their social exclusion and improving their quality of life.
Learning outcomes:

Programme graduate will be able to:
1. Find and understand modern scientific ideas emerging form fundamental and applied interdisciplinary research and practice, define a holistic approach to a human, explain the trends in the development of the society, stratification, social roles and identities, and to evaluate critically and analyze social problems according to contemporary sociological paradigms.
2. Define basic knowledge, theories and laws of life, medical and social sciences, which are the foundation of professional their qualifications; be able to extrapolate them developing their subject competences.
3. Use scientific databases, evaluate the quality of the information sources, use statistical testing and research methods in their own research in biomedical and / or social sciences.
4. Understand and be able to assess the social interaction of political, economic and cultural phenomena using that in the inter-institutional cooperation.
5. Communicate with able bodied and disabled persons of all ages in recognition of their identity, guided by ethical provisions that all individuals in the society form its diversity and are valuable in terms of the development of moral, economic and social relations.
6. Communicate and collaborate with professionals from other disciplines and work in a team, critically assess the facts and ideas, produce argumentative ideas in the preparation of public reports and participating in discussions.
7. Inspire colleagues to take interest in modern fundamental and applied research achievements and to encourage team work to develop new technologies and apply them in practice.
8. Choose adequate effective planning and organization methods for disabled people in different situations (education, sports and leisure).
9. Understand the importance of informed active, persistent and purposeful participation of an individual and the society on the formation of personal identity.
10. Creatively and constantly learn from the achievements of modern fundamental and applied interdisciplinary science and proven practices and apply them creatively in professional activities of the rehabilitologist of the disabled.
11. Know and describe the general pathological processes in the body and the framework of medical rehabilitation; define the differences between physical rehabilitation of the disabled and medical rehabilitation of patients; be able to assess musculoskeletal deformities, principles of application of prostheses and orthopaedic devices, posture, gait, wheelchair seating for the disabled.
12. Apply, analyze and interpret the functional diagnostic methods of the activity of the body systems and identify immediate life-threatening signs of health problems that may occur during their working life, and provide First Aid until the arrival of medical professionals.
13. Create, select and use physical rehabilitation programs for persons with disabilities, including restoration, acquisition and maintenance of their daily life and survival actions, critically evaluate their effects, make changes and discontinue operations if it is required by a disabled person’s condition.
14. Know and explain the effect of massage and the indications or contraindications for massage, be able to perform massage treatments and make a massage action plan for various movement and musculoskeletal system disorders and injuries, disorders of peripheral and central nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, lymph and peripheral circulatory disorders.
15. Know and describe psychomotor, personal cognitive, emotional and social development of abnormal infants.
16. Know, describe and distinguish that the psychological and social rehabilitation of the disabled include the increase, development or acquisition of their self-esteem, self-expression and social communication.
17. Distinguish, identify and compare medical and social models of disability indicating their different effects on the psychosocial development and independence of people with disabilities, their social integration and inclusion, social policy development, social well-being of people with disabilities.
18. Select and apply methods and programmes of social rehabilitation for persons with disabilities in order to ensure the quality of life and welfare improvement for people with disabilities.
19. Know, understand and interpret the general development patterns of children with special needs, the impact various disabilities (vision, hearing, movement, mental, etc.) on the personality development.
20. Know, understand and be able to apply teaching methods of special pedagogy and psychology according to the peculiarities of psychosocial development for persons with different types of disabilities.
21. Know the basic rules and basics of sign language in the communication with people with disabilities aiming at communicating with deaf people.
22. Know and apply the methodology and the basic principles of organization in teaching physical education skills in the heterogenic group in the context of health, wellness and physical fitness.
23. Select, analyze and interpret the different forms of physical education and activities appropriate for disabled children and young people of all ages, organize and implement various social activities in various social environments (segregated, integrated and inclusive) as well as produce arguments and evaluate the adapted physical education and / or adapted physical activity programmes.
24. Know and understand the theoretical and methodological framework of various sports for disabled people, be able to identify the applicable procedures and specific training appropriate to the type of disability.
25. Classify disabilities according to the capabilities of movement and intellectual functions and the specificity of sports branches.
26. Choose appropriate physical activities for disabled people, forms of recreation and / or sport and apply safeguard measures during the activities in and out of water, organize competitions and participation in recreational physical activity as well as leisure activities.
27. Use compensatory technical measures, sports devices and tools according to the disabled individual’s needs and capabilities as well as the chosen sport.
28. Know and recognize the need for nursing process for disabled and elderly people, its characteristics and application possibilities.
29. Know and understand links of aging and disability and physical activity, social inclusion and the quality of life, and promote and support the independence of older people, their physical activity, efficiency, self-determination, inclusion in the community, full citizenship.
30. Select, organize and conduct physical activity for the elderly with disabilities and without them, maintaining and developing their social relationships, communication and collaboration, meaningful occupation.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Student activity and reflection based methods: group discussion, case study, empirical and analytical research, etc.;
Task-based methods: preparation of projects, individual or group work, reviews, scientific papers and / or others;
Information transfer based methods: lectures – contact and distance, counselling, etc.;
Information transfer and student activity based methods: seminars, workshops, games, work practice, etc.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Oral assessment methods: presentation, etc.
Written assessment methods: reviews, research papers, case studies, essays, examinations - open, closed or combined form of testing, etc.;
Integrated (written and oral) assessment methods: projects (individual or group), Final Thesis, etc.;
Cumulative assessment methods: portfolio method; study process and outcome-oriented method, cumulative summative evaluation.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
This programme is unique in Lithuania; it has been developed on the bases of APA study standards established by the experts of 23 European universities. It is meant for training professionals to work with different types of disadvantaged people who are not sick; they only have permanent irreversible dysfunctions, aiming directly at their physical, psychological and social rehabilitation. The programme differs from the physiotherapy programme as physiotherapy programme prepares professionals to work with patients in the area of medical rehabilitation in health care institutions.
