General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
Prepare specialist who is aware of animal morphology, the physiological and pathological processes, able to deal with animal care, protection, nursing and treatment, and carry out a veterinary sanitary expertise; able to engage in pharmacy services and organize the service business.
Learning outcomes:
1. Be able to evaluate the limits of the gained competence in the field of veterinary medicine, carry out tasks and commitments.
2. Be able to adapt to new situations, analyse and organise information in the veterinary field, assess and maintain the quality of work.
3. Be able to communicate in the official and foreign languages with colleagues and clients, submit ideas and propose solutions both in written and verbally.
4. Be able to interact in an online environment, apply computer technologies in the delivery of information, provide qualified veterinary information to professionals and the public.
5. Be able to articulate the purpose and objectives of the research, analyse scientific literature and other information sources, develop the research methodology, collect data, summarise the results and draw conclusions.
6. Be able to use literature, databases and other sources of information.
7. Be able to control, monitor and ensure adequate security standards for yourself and those around you.
8. Be able to apply security measures to prevent the spread of infections.
9. Be able to appoint the admission time, admit the animal into the clinic and ensure proper care of the animal.
10. Be able to carry out financial operations after the consultation or treatment, sell relevant products.
11. Be able to supervise the veterinary clinic, properly prepare the clinic environment, tools and materials.
12. Be able to prepare patients for medical procedures and tests.
13. Be able to provide first aid, evaluate the clinical condition of the animal, maintain basic vital functions and perform the initial differential diagnosis.
14. Be able to provide animal care, identify and describe ways of the disease onset, and the severity of clinical signs.
15. Be able to monitor the animal’s recovery process and provide the necessary post operation care.
16. Be able to explain to the client how to take care of a sick animal at home.
17. Be able to advise animal keepers, colleagues and the public on issues related to veterinary medicine.
18. Be able to take samples for different laboratory tests, perform blood, urine and other tests using the clinic equipment, and instructed by the veterinarian interpret the test results.
19. Be able to prepare the diagnostic imaging equipment, materials, and the animal for the imaging examination.
20. Be able to assist the veterinarian in the performance of X-ray examination.
21. Be able to properly prepare the animal for medical procedures or tests carried out by the veterinarian.
22. Be able to safely and effectively perform certain clinical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures if instructed by the veterinarian.
23. Be able to assist the veterinarian in surgical procedures, and instructed by the veterinarian perform simple operations.
24. Be able to maintain the postoperative nursing care, choose the right tools and material.
25. Be able to prepare adequate anaesthetic equipment and materials for the anaesthesia.
26. Be able to prepare the animal for anaesthesia and assist the veterinarian in performing and maintaining the anaesthesia.
27. Be able to give the client medications prescribed by the veterinarian, and explain how to use them properly and safely.
28. Be able to correctly calculate the medication dosage and inject it.
29. Be able to evaluate the suitability of the products and raw materials of animal origin for human consumption, and carry out the hygiene monitoring in food handling businesses.
30. Be able to apply principles, methods and knowledge of biomedical sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology) in veterinary practice.
31. Be able to assume responsibility for the quality of the work and work of subordinates, following professional ethics and citizenship.
32. Be able to organise and manage the time and work, make decisions independently and evaluate their impact in a defined situation.
33. Be able to learn independently and apply acquired knowledge in practice.

Activities of teaching and learning:
Lectures, practical classes, laboratory work, instructional literature analysis, task solving, preparation and presentation of the literature review, course projects, self-study assignments, professional practice, final thesis and final examination.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Cumulative assessment is applied. Certain learning outcomes foreseen by the curriculum are assessed by components of the cumulative assessment. Each subject or module is completed with the final examination or the evaluation of the student's individual work (project). The final grade consists of the cumulative assessment components, which are indicated in the curriculum of the study subject (e.g. intermediate settlements, self-study assignments, examination). The percentage of the final grade is indicated in the curriculum of the study subject.

Study field subjects (123 credits): Animal Anatomy; Latin Veterinary Terminology; Care and Wellness of Small Farm Animals; Animal Welfare; Applied Ethology; Pharmacology and Administration of Medications; Veterinary Pathology; Animal Physiology; Clinical Diagnostics and Non-Communicable Diseases; Obstetrics and Gynecology; Epizootiology; Surgery; Parasitology; Veterinary Sanitary Expertise; Microbiology; Nursing Process and Clinical Skills; Veterinary Law and Professional Ethics; Wellness of Exotic Animals; Small Animal Breeds and Nursing; Laboratory Diagnosis.
Practices (30 credits): Therapy and Disease Prevention; Small Animal Surgical Nursing; Final.

Veterinary assistants are not trained in other Lithuanian colleges.

You will be able to work in small animal veterinary clinics, large livestock farms, apiaries, private veterinary service companies, pet-shops, stray animal organizations, food and veterinary laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and others animal housing places, as well as food/feed handling companies.

Access to the second cycle studies upon meeting requirements set by the accepting higher education institution.
