Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To prepare cosmetology professionals who are able to provide cosmetology services with a holistic approach and quality control; to work independently and in a team with health and beauty professionals in the organisation of health and beauty service businesses.
Learning outcomes:
A graduate:
1.1 Understands the Lithuanian national health system, legislation governing professional activities and the principles of personal data protection.
1.2. Understands the anatomy, physiology, pathology, cytology and genetics, skin histology, dermatology and allergy, microbiology, infectious diseases and their control, pharmacology, toxicology, biophysics, bio-physics, bio-chemistry, cosmetic chemistry and material science, hygiene, healthy lifestyle and other areas related to the activities of cosmetologists.
2.1. Be able to plan and carry out applied research oriented to the cosmetology profession in accordance with research ethics.
2.2 Be able to apply the results of research to develop professional practice through the application and implementation of cosmetological innovations.
3.1. Be able to plan and carry out an assessment of the condition of the skin and its appendages, to select appropriate assessment methods, to recognise possible pathologies, to formulate a cosmetological problem and to design an individual skin care programme.
3.2 Be able to carry out manual and hardware procedures for the care of the skin of the face and body, decorative cosmetics, skin of the hands and feet, and nails, in compliance with the health and safety requirements of beauty services, ensuring the prevention of communicable diseases and allergic reactions.
3.3 Be able to plan and organise the business and educational activities of cosmetic services.
4.1. Be able to communicate and cooperate with colleagues, clients and various social groups in a professional ethical and civic manner.
4.2. Be able to work independently and as part of a team with health professionals in a multicultural environment.
5.1 Be able to critically evaluate own professional performance, knowledge and values, reflect on own growth as a professional and understand the importance of lifelong learning.
5.2. Be able to make decisions independently, assess their impact and act in a given situation, applying practical knowledge, skills and moral responsibility for the well-being of society and the environment.
Activities of teaching and learning:
The course includes a variety of student-centred teaching methods (case studies, making and justifying assumptions, observation, analysis of best practices, role-playing, etc.). Lectures are often non-traditional, i.e. lecturers invite guest speakers, guests and practitioners to share their practical experience, situations and cases from their own practical work.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Courses are concluded with an examination or a project work, depending on the results of the study programme. The studies are carried out and the students' knowledge and skills are evaluated using a ten-point criterion-based evaluation system. The examination format for general subjects is complex (written and oral questionnaires, tests, etc.), while the examination format for subjects in the field of study is case studies, situations and practical exercises.

Core and Compulsory Subjects (Total: 150 ECTS): Anatomy and physiology, Style and Design of Appearance, Cell chemistry, biology and genetics, Microbiology and infection control, General and clinical cosmetology, Dermatology, Fundamentals of massage, First aid, Hair removal procedures, Psychology, Pharmacology, cosmetic chemistry and cosmetic materials, Drawing and colouring, Make-up techniques, Manicure and pedicure, Apparatus procedures, Cosmetic facial care procedures, Nursing and clinical pathology, Applied research methodology, Aesthetic phyto-aromatherapy, Basics of spa therapies and body care procedures, Business organisation and beauty service management, Public health and healthy lifestyle, Basics of permanent make-up, Basics of aesthetic medicine, Basics of cosmetology graduate thesis preparation.
Practice. Full-time studies: 3d semester - Make-up, Hand and Foot Care (6 ECTS); 4th semester - Cosmetic Facial Procedures (6 ECTS); 5th semester - Customer Service (6 ECTS); 6 semester - Final Practical Practice and Supervision, Assessment of Practical Skills (15 ECTS).
Part-time studies: 4th semester - Make-up, Hand and Foot Care (6 ECTS); 5th semester - Cosmetic Facial Procedures (6 ECTS); 6th semester - Customer Service (6 ECTS); 8th semester - Final Practical Practice and Supervision, Assessment of Practical Skills (15 ECTS).
Professional Bachelor Graduation Thesis (9 ECTS).

Distinctive features of a study programme:
The programme is the only study programme in the field of Cosmetology at at Utena University of Applied Sciences. The programme studies are based on the educational philosophy of the Cosmetology programme, which is based on the philosophy of pragmatism and the Miller pyramid model.

Access to professional activity:
Graduates of the cosmetology study programme will be able to practice on their own and work in cosmetic cabinets, beauty salons, wellness and SPA centres, film and photo studios, create specialised individual companies, work as make-up artists, consultants in cosmetic shops and cosmetology businesses as cosmetologists, and carry out the following functions assigned to them: assessing the condition of the client's skin and its appendages by means of visual, manual and instrumental methods of examination and assessment; completing and collecting data on the condition of the skin and its appendages; drawing up an individual cosmetic care plan for the client and advising on the care of the skin and its appendages; selecting and carrying out cosmetic products, materials, tools and apparatus for cosmetic procedures to maintain the client's good physical condition; organising the beauty services business; carrying out applied research in the field of cosmetology.
Access to further study:
After completion of Professional Bachelor in Cosmetology studies, the graduates are able to continue studies in the study programmes of health or other sciences.
