Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
Prepare social work professionals with a creative and critical mind capable to solve social problems and empower different groups of clients in a complex and changing environment, working independently and in cooperation with specialists from other fields to pursue positive social changes in the life of individuals and society.
Learning outcomes:
Graduates will be able to:
1. Interpret information on the need for social support of various groups of society;
2. Design a model of social support by selecting social work methods suitable to keep in touch with changes in the life and environment of clients.
3. Develop a social work action plan for solving the problems of different groups of clients.
4. Adapt methods of social work to address the problems of different groups of clients.
5. To raise material and non-material resources for solving the social problems of different groups of clients.
6. Provide general and special social services for the empowerment of clients of different social groups.
7. Collaborate with different groups of clients, their environment and social partners for preventing the consequences of social problems.
8. Analyze the suitability and accessibility of social services provided to different groups of clients.
9. Evaluate processes and results of social support provided to different groups of clients.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Engaging lectures, workshops, discussions, group work, practical tasks, literature review, case work, project development, self-study, presentations reflective thinking.
Innovative student-focused teaching and learning methods are applied. Student-oriented lectures, independent work, practical assignments based on tasks and group work focused upon critical thinking. An environment is created where students are provided an opportunity to participate in the process of the study programme, to reflect upon their activities; they are encouraged to reveal their creativity and share innovative ideas.
The programme aims to actively involve students in class activities, to encourage discussion in a student-teacher dialogue.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The evaluation of study outcomes is part of the study process. Assessment of the subject study outcomes is consistently carried out during the semester and the (examination) session. A cumulative assessment is applied. The components of the cumulative assessment include certain study outcomes provided in the subject of the study programme. The final grade includes the components of the cumulative assessment, e.g. mid-sessional reports, practical tasks, self-study, the final reflection and examination. The combination of these components, expressed in a percentage of the cumulative assessment, is provided in the subject description of the course.
The student's knowledge and skills, during the examination session, are assessed unless the student meets the requirements of the subject course during the semester. Student's knowledge and skills are assessed in grades from 1 to 10.

The social work programme consists of the following parts:
1. General subjects of college studies - 15 credits (Information Technologies, Foreign Language, Voluntary activity in social work, Professional Communication and Document Management);
2. Study field subjects -135 credits which comprise subjects of study - 96 credits (Basics and History of Social Work, Law, General and Personality Development Psychology, Fundamentals of Sociology, Practical Philosophy in Social Work, Social Work Theories and Methods, Communication Psychology, Social Services, Social Welfare Policy, Individual Social Work, Social Work in Health Care System, Team Work of Professionals, Social Work Supervision, Social Work with a Group, Psychology of Social Support, Community Social Work, Social Work with Families, Rehabilitation and Social Integration, Social Research Methods, Administration of Social Services Institutions, Social Project Development and Management), Professional Internship of - 30 credits - Non-institutional social work (8 credits), Inpatient institutional social work (10 credits), Social case-work (12 credits), Professional Bachelor Thesis- 9 credits

Courses of Deeper Studies of the Same Study Field - 21 credits (Psychology of Antisocial Behavior, Special Psychology and Pedagogy, Educational Science and Social Pedagogy, Social Gerontology, Child Protection Policy; optional subjects – 9 credits.
Optional subjects in the social work programme consist of 9 credits and include the following subjects: Stress and Self-Regulation, Crisis and Their Management and Basics of Etiquette. In addition, students are free to choose subjects from a list of optional subjects of Kaunas college or to choose certain subjects offered by other schools of higher education.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
The study programme is focused not only on development of professional competences, but also on development of a wide range of general skills and values. Also, the programme is based on student-centered teaching and providing innovative and creative knowledge and developing presentation skills. Students gain the ability to analyze, critically evaluate, and creatively find solutions to problems.
Students wishing to upgrade their knowledge in social work abroad, have the opportunity to study in Finland, Holland, Spain, Czech Republic Belgium and in other countries with which cooperative agreements have been signed.
Those who desire can conduct practice abroad. Students actively participate in the Erasmus+ or Nord Plus exchange programmers.
Students are provided opportunities to volunteer in their selected area of interest. They can become involved in student government structures which organize a variety of student events and in addressing student problems. During the studies, students are encouraged to reveal creativity through various methods. This promotes a deeper self-knowledge. In addition, students are provided opportunities to study in the Erasmus+ exchange programme.

The acquired Social Work Professional Bachelor's degree allows employment in the day care centres for the disabled (adults and children), care homes, boarding houses, children's education institutions, social affair departments of municipalities, children and adults' crisis centres.
Access to further study:
Graduates may continue their studies in higher education in the second cycle (Master’s programme) in Lithuania and abroad according to the procedure established by the higher education institution. Graduates can upgrade their qualifications and knowledge at conferences, workshops and development related courses organized by Kauno kolegija/University of Applied Sciences.
