Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To train skilled, creative and critically thinking lawyers who have acquired theoretical and practical knowledge of the nature, mission and principles of the law as well as the standards of its different branches; are able to apply them in standard and non-standard situations; and seek continuous personal and professional development while working in public non-governmental or private sectors.
Learning outcomes:
1. Knows the principles of the national constitutional and ordinary law, the Lithuanian legal system, the standards of the international public, private, European Union law and is able to apply it in professional activities while dealing with specific legal issues.
2. Knows theory of economics, management, human and environmental protection, legal history, psychology and philosophy and is able to apply it in practice.
3. Able to communicate in professional foreign language.
4. Able to gather information using modern information technologies and databases and conduct scientific-empirical research using effective methods necessary to solve legal issues of the professional performance.
5. Able to analyse various legal documents and assess the principles of their validity, and identify the specific legal rules governing persons’ activities.
6. Able to represent natural and legal entities following professional ethics requirements, adjusting to practical performance innovations, changing conditions and handling confidential information properly.
7. Specializations:
7.1. Able to draft the internal documents and business transactions used by business entities, apply alternative methods of resolving business disputes, comply with international legislation, and have knowledge of the specific tax environment of business entities (Business Law).
7.2. Able to collect and systemise various types of information necessary for detecting criminal offences, qualify criminal offences, and prepare and systemise criminal procedure documents, ensuring a smooth pre-trial investigation process. (Pre-Trial Investigation).
8. Able to critically assess the personal performance and knowledge as well as those of other persons.
9. Able to express personal ideas orally and in writing correctly and fluently, communicate and cooperate in multicultural groups effectively and address the challenges encountered in practice efficiently.
10. Able to improve professional competencies through lifelong learning independently, apply new ideas in practice, and adapt to innovations and changing environments.
11. Able to plan and organise personal performance and follow general ethical requirements.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Traditional and (or) an interactive lecture, group discussion, individual group projects, brainstorming, case studies, problem solving, learning from experience, problem-based learning, expert method, concept map, individual problems search, information analysis and synthesis, data interpretation, debate, individual and group practical tasks.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
To encourage student motivation and consistent, steady work, the summative assessment system is introduced. Possible knowledge rating methods: exam (orally and in writing), quizes and term papers, final theses, abstracts, oral presentations, project work presentation, practice reports, testing, individual oral interviews, preparation of written reviews on legal matters; written reports on analysis of legal cases.
Framework:
Study subjects, practical training:
General study subjects (15 credits): Legal Foreign Language, Basic of Economics, Information Technologies.
Study Subjects of Study Field – 156 credits;
1. Study Subjects (99 credits):
Legal Language and Document Management, Theory of Law, Legal System and Law Enforcement Institutions, Constitutional Law, General and Legal Psychology, History of Law, Administrative and Administrative Procedure Law, Fundamentals of Legal Research Methodology, Law Philosophy, Labour Law, Professional Ethics, Internet and Technology Law, Civil Law, Family Law, Criminal Law, Basic Business Law, Intellectual Property Law, Law of Civil Proceedings, Law of Criminal Proceedings, International Law, European Union Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Environmental Law.
2. Practical Training (32 credits):
Legal Paperwork Internship (I), Internship (II), Internship (III).
3. Final thesis (10 credits).
Specialisations:
Business Law (15 credits): Company Law, Contract Law, Tax Law, International Trade Law.
Pre-trial Investigation (15 credits): Theory and Practice of the Pre-trial Investigation, Forensics, Qualification of Criminal Offences, Law of Sentence Execution.
Optional courses:
Students can choose:
• one from two specializations (15 credits);
• optional study subjects (9 credits):
Management, Career Planning and Leadership, Protection of Human Rights, Protection of Consumer Rights, etc. from the list of optional study subjects as offered by Kaunas University of Applied Sciences.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
The Law study programme contains the study subjects which develop general and subject-specific student competence contributing in training educated, following the concept of life-long learning, and responsible members of society who will apply the knowledge acquired during the process of studies in creation of sustainable, multicultural, and the rule of law country. In addition to the classic legal subjects, Basic Economics, Legal Foreign Language, Management, Career Planning and Leadership, and Information Technologies are taught. The study programme employs legal professionals - practitioners working in various law enforcement institutions and in business, insurance companies, state and municipal institutions. For one semester, students are able to study in various foreign universities and institutions of higher education or take internship abroad (in public or private institutions, companies, and organisations); they may participate in international training programmes; opportunities are provided for active participation in the process of organization and implementation of legal events and activities in science, in preparation of scientific publications and reports at various international student conferences.

Access to professional activity:
Professional Bachelor's lawyers are trained to work in the private sector (in companies: a jurist, Specialist of Legal Department, Personnel Manager or Specialist of Personnel Department; in law firms: a lawyer), as well as to start individual law practice and work in the public sector (in law enforcement institutions: in the courtroom: as a court hearing secretary and a court clerk; as a lawyer and a clerk in a prosecutor's office; as an Assistant Bailiff in a bailiff’s office; as a lawyer in a notary office; as an official in police, customs, military police, special investigation service, financial crime investigation service, state border guard service, reformatory system, public security service, fire protection and rescue services; as a civil servant in state and municipal institutions).
Access to further study:
The graduates are entitled to a credit transfer system for entering level one of university study programmes; they can choose Master programmes, too. The continuation of studies is possible in the study programmes of the field of law in Lithuanian and/or foreign universities.
