General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To develop a port and shipping manager who will be able to operate in the national and international maritime market by applying knowledge in the social, humanities, physical and technological sciences.
The purpose of the specialization "Maritime Business Management" is to organize the activities of seaport cargo terminals, act as an agent for the formation of ships, shipping lines and crews, forwarding various types of cargo transported by sea and land, formalize customs procedures and perform other related activities in the international maritime transport sector, to evaluate the performance in terms of management efficiency and economics in accordance with the requirements of national, international general and maritime legislation and quality standards in accordance with the operational process and technological peculiarities.
The aim of the specialization "Maritime Financial Management" is to understand the structure of maritime business, the main principles of various types of maritime business and, based on this information, manage the company's finances by applying the newest financial technologies and accounting models in national and international maritime business.
The aim of the specialization "Maritime Tourism Management" is to organize sea, water tourism and hospitality business on shore and coast, to create tourism routes, to provide hospitality services to tourists, to organize boat trips, to be able to manage small boats and tours for tourists on coasts and coasts according to national and international tourism requirements.
Learning outcomes:
1. To know the main theories of management and related social sciences, enabling to understand and evaluate external micro and macroeconomic phenomena, political, social, cultural, legal, informational, natural and other environmental, internal factors (human, technological, financial, information and other resources) in the business environment.
2. To apply the main management theories and principles in the analysis of the management of the maritime transport sector and business enterprises, taking into account the development of the country and the maritime transport sector, the principles of social responsibility and ethics.
3. To carry out applied research of companies in the maritime transport sector, applying the latest technologies, effective research methods and models, to assess the economic, technological, legal and social changes in the international maritime transport sector in the country and to apply solutions for management and innovation.
4. To apply modern information technologies and systems in the maritime transport sector for the analysis and management of the activities of a maritime business enterprise.
5. To manage the activities of the seaport cargo terminal by planning the resources of the cargo terminal according to the technology of cargo handling and terminal equipment, organizing cargo and storage works according to various loading schemes, controlling the progress and quality of cargo handling in accordance with port safety and marine environmental protection requirements; technologies.

6a. Manage the activities of ship agency, freight forwarding and ship crew formation in accordance with commercial maritime legislation and quality standards, ensuring the continuity of seaport and shipping activities.

7. To make socially responsible management decisions and administer the activities of the company in the maritime transport sector in accordance with the principles of professional ethics, national and international legislation, principles and standards of quality management, environmental protection, safe shipping, assessing the internationalization of activities using information technology.
8. To collect and structure the data of the company's activity, to critically evaluate the performance of the business of the maritime transport sector, to provide suggestions on the issues of management improvement, taking into account the nature of the activity and changes in the business environment.
9. To communicate and collaborate effectively in a professional environment with specialists in various fields, working in a multicultural environment individually and in a team.
10. Communicate effectively in writing and orally, analyzing maritime business management issues.
11. To independently acquire knowledge of professional activity, to understand responsibility for one's performance and its impact on the development of society, economy, culture, well-being, to develop harmony and ethical worldview, to develop erudition, creativity, values of international mentality in the process of internationalization and lifelong learning.
Activities of teaching and learning:
• Student-oriented lectures, critical thinking, integrated teaching of subject content and foreign language, analysis of scientific and practical literature, content analysis of national and international legal acts regulating the maritime transport sector and business;
• Studies using computer based programs and electronic simulators, a creation of prototypes of information systems operating in the seaport (Seaport terminal operations simulator, maritime freight information system KIPIS, cargo route planning programs, GIS and SeaRates, ship crewing system Crew Inspector, logistics and accounting system B1, marine English language training programs Marlins, MarEng, computer engineering graphics system AutoCad, etc.);
• Preparation of applied research publications and presentations at national and international conferences; problem-based learning, case studies, projects, work in small and large groups, discussions and reflection, creative writing, counselling, self-studies, tutorials etc.
• Practical studies are carried out during trainings, introductory and professional internships, field trips to maritime businesses companies are organized, on-the-job training provided;
• During the studies, contact lectures are combined with consultations, self-studies and distance studies via virtual conferences.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Formative, cumulative and summative assessment methods are used in oral and written surveys. Distinctive features of a study programme:
• The study program in the management of the maritime business is only such study programme in Lithuania, but is widespread in all maritime academies around the world and is an essential part of the maritime study system.
• Port and shipping management studies and the competencies of the future specialist are based on the needs of the international maritime labour market, regulated by the conventions of the International Maritime Organization. Therefore, the study program structure and study subjects are similar to those in foreign maritime academies. The student is free to elect a part of the studies at any foreign maritime academy or university, as well as at other higher education institutions where management studies are carried out. This provides an opportunity for graduates to work not only in the country but also in foreign seaports or maritime businesses companies.
• Specialized computer based programmes and electronic simulators of a real information systems operating in homeport and other seaports are introduced and intensively applied in the training and teaching. Therefore, students do not have any difficulties in practice or when starting to work.
• Studies of maritime and business in English and optionally a second foreign language is Russian, Spanish or German are provided, because in the international maritime business communication a foreign language is important.
• Lecturers, scientists, researchers, employees and managers of various maritime business companies provide the latest exclusive theoretical and practical knowledge about shipping, port activities, peculiarities of maritime sector management, organize study trips to maritime business companies, sharing the results of their research and involve students into research projects.
• Trainees usually work and receive remuneration in seaport companies during their professional practice.
• For studies or placements under the Erasmus + academic exchange programme, higher education institutions or companies can be selected in Europe's the largest ports.
• In cooperation with the Naval Forces of the Academy, students may participate in the training program for commanders of junior officers of the Armed Forces and obtain a reserve lieutenant's military degree and continue their service in the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Professional activities and career of graduates of Professional Bachelor in Port and Shipping Management study programme developed from specialist to management position of port and shipping business, maritime transport, stevedoring terminals, ships and shipping lines or crewing agencies, maritime freight forwarding companies, customs, customs brokerage companies or other water or land transport business companies or in the state maritime administration companies in the country or abroad, for example, in the units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Navy, Klaipeda State Seaport Authority, Maritime Department of the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration, custom, etc. The graduate may work in a seaport as a stevedore, stevedoring planner, freight forwarder, ship or shipping line or ship crew agent, ship charter broker, import and export manager, water and land transport, logistics, project manager and other managerial positions at seaport and maritime companies and similar work in the field of maritime transport sector or related.

Graduates will be able to continue their studies in postgraduate programs of social science and to pursue a Master's Degree in national and foreign higher education institutions according to stated rules and procedures. There are possibilities to upgrade qualification business management, international trade, international marketing, public administration or acquire a new qualification in related field of studies.
