General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The goal of this program is to educate highly qualified specialists - special pedagogues and speech therapists, who are able to recognize, assess and meet special educational needs of children with disabilities and disorders; to provide professional pedagogical assistance; critically evaluate and solve the problems of meeting the special education needs and inclusive education by applying the latest scientific research-based innovations of special education in accordance with the basic principles of human rights, equal opportunities and human values.

Critical thinking, problem solving, reflexivity abilities. Ability to communicate constructively and collaborate with students, their parents, teachers, to work in a team. Ability to organize educational research.
Subject specific competencies developed:
The knowledge of psycho-pedagogical assessment of children developmental disorders, disabilities and special educational needs. Ability to identify and meet the special educational needs of children, in accordance with the child's educational needs to provide personalised special pedagogical and speech therapy support for pre-school and school-age children in various educational environments Ability to analyze, critically evaluate the processes and tendencies of special education development, apply research-based special education methodologies and innovations.
Learning outcomes:
The graduate conceptually perceives theories of inclusive and special education, is able to assess and meet special educational needs and their dynamics; to identify, critically evaluate and solve problems of inclusive and special education; to apply modern educational methods and special education methodologies, to use information and communication technologies in the process of special education; has a competence to organize research and reflect on educational changes; to work in a team. While studying speech therapy, the bachelor acquires additional skills: to evaluate the development of the child's language, to identify speech and language disorders, to meet language education needs, to apply speech therapy methodologies in practice and professionally counsel persons with language and speech disorders as wel as their families and profesional team members on the issues concerning the language education, etc. questions.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Active learning methods dominate: case study, problem learning, co-opted study methods, collaborative learning, reflection of activity, etc. Learning autonomy, critical thinking is encouraged. Students acquire the ability to recognize, critically evaluate and solve real problems of future professional activity when performing study assignments in educational institutions. Students are given the opportunity to seek the highest level of advancement in counseling, improving the study tasks performed; if necessary, can be studied according to an individual plan. The outcomes of particular subjects, the methods designed to achieve them and the methods for students’ evaluation are elaborated on in each subject involved in the program.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Applied cumulative assessment of study results provided by the study program. The final grade (score) consists of the components of the cumulative assessment (intermediate tasks and exam) provided for in the subject program, the percentage of which is provided in the description of each study subject. Encouraged to achieve at least a typical level of achievement.

The Bachelor's degree program ‘Special Education and Speech Therapy‘ consists of three parts: 1) The choice of general university education subjects is 15 credits. 2) 60 credits – for the qualification of a teacher. 3) The volume of subjects of the main field of study is 165 credits; of which 90 credits – Special Education; 55 credits - Speech Therapy, 20 kr. – alternative subjects of the study field. In the first semesters of the study program general university subjects are studied, also basic subjects of the study field (cycle of subjects for the understanding of disabilities, disorders and early special education needs of pre-school and school-age children) and subjects for acquiring the qualification of a teacher (general, developmental and pedagogical psychology, general and special pedagogy, meeting the special educational needs in the lessons and extra educational activities after lessons). In later semesters special methods of linguistic (reading, writing), mathematical, social, natural science education, and speech therapies are studying. Students acquire practical skills to apply special education and speech therapy knowledge through practical tasks of subjects and in the practices of special pedagogue and speech therapist in pre-school educational institutions, schools of general education. The volume of pedagogical practice is 43 kr. At the end of studies, the final pedagogical studies (3 cr.) and the bachelor's thesis (15 cr.) are defended.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
Special pedagogues and speech therapists are only trained at Siauliai University. In 2015, the International Commission of Experts admitted that Siauliai University is the only higher education institution in the country, which has a strong tradition and strong potential of teachers to train special pedagogues and speech therapists.The profession of special pedagogue and speech therapist is demanding and promising: about 90%. graduates successfully work in educational institutions. Students have the opportunity to study with participation in real educational environments, doing problem-based learning tasks for subject studies; cooperative (service) learning helps students to link their studies and practical teaching. Therefore, students are well prepared for the work of a specialist teacher and speech therapist and successfully work. Flexibility and accessibility of study organization. A modern study environment is created, and the student is provided with various ways to receive teachers’ support, counseling, personalization of studies, etc. Some subject studies are combined with learning in virtual environments. Internationalization of studies. Students have the opportunity to study abroad through an Erasmus exchange program; short-term international internships for students in higher education institutions of other countries are organized; lecturers from foreign universities are invited to read lectures.

The acquired qualification enables to work as a special pedagogue or / and speech therapist in early, pre-school and general education, special education and other science and education institutions, as well as in health and social security establishments.
Access to further study:
Graduates can continue their studies in master's degree programs in the field of education and other social sciences. Additional competences can be acquired by choosing the module of study ‘Autism spectrum and behavioral disorders’ (46 credits); duration of studies - 1 year; the acquired competencies are certified by a Certificate of Study and are awarded to the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI, United Kingdom) by the Institute for Crisis Prevention (KPI, United Kingdom). It is possible to acquire additional competences by choosing the program of non-formal education "Education of children with visual disorders" (90 credits). Acquired competences are confirmed by a Certificate of Study and give the right to educate children with visual impairment. It is possible to acquire additional competences by choosing a non-formal education program "Education of children with hearing impairment" (90 credits). Acquired competences are confirmed by a certificate of education and give the right to educate children with hearing impairment.
