Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The main aim of the University’s Undergraduate Economics Program is to prepare competent economists with an ability to apply the knowledge of the economic theory in practice, processing analytical, creative and critical thinking and assessing the situation, analyzing the changing economic environment in national and international levels using both traditional and innovative quantitative and qualitative methods of economic analysis
Learning outcomes:
1. Ability to recognize economic theories and to understand the main economic principles, changes in economic systems and solutions of economic problems.
2. Ability to apply theories of finance, management, marketing, and of other social sciences and gained economic knowledge in interdisciplinary studies of economic problems at micro and macro levels
3. Ability to identify and analyze economic, financial and statistical indicators, to solve practical economic problems at micro and macro levels, to recognize, explain and comprehensively evaluate recurring economic factors and changes in the organizations, countries and the world, as well as to summarize research results, using both quantitative and qualitative economic, mathematic and econometric methods and creative and critical thinking.
4. Ability to collect, process, organize and evaluate economic, financial and social statistical data and information required for solutions of main and specialized economic, business and social problems at an enterprise, organization, country and international levels.
5. Ability to convey information, to present results of an individual or group economic assessment, ideas, business and socials problems and their solutions for various audiences, to successfully communicate, discuss, negotiate and to effectively execute professional activities and research in multi-cultural environment.
6. Ability to make decisions and take responsibility for the results of those decisions, to constantly plan, adjust and pursue the improvement of independent learning and professional skills.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Analysis of problematic samples and questions; exercise and problem solving; verbal self-reflection; individual student work: search and analysis of information in educational literature and periodical sources. Consultations; discuss the tasks of group seminar; project-based learning; written group work and oral presentations.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
VMU applies criteria-based study achievement assessment system using a 10 grade scale. The lowest positive grade is 5. Student achievements are assessed by applying a cumulative grading system as stated in the Chapter 15 of the VMU Studies Regulation document and in corresponding with VMU Rector’s orders regarding student knowledge assessment issues. The goal of this system is to ensure trustworthy, objective and adequate student knowledge and skills assessment. According to this system, the final grade for the study subject consists of the following two equal parts: accumulative grade during semester (mid-term exam (20-30 per cent of the final grade), homework and other intermediate assessment (20-30 per cent of the final grade); and the final exam (50 per cent of the final grade).
