Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Medical engineering studies are interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of engineering, biology and medical sciences, which are aimed at solving human health problems through advances in disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention technologies. The purpose of medical engineering is to improve the quality of health services through technical means - creating and designing technical equipment to improve medicine and human health. The aim of the study program: to prepare medical engineers who, after completing the study program, would successfully enter the labor market related to the provision of health care services, by getting employment in companies performing activities related to multi-purpose medical equipment or in state enterprises or in another field chosen by the graduate, or continue to pursue a scientific degree and , applying the practice of engineering creativity and critical thinking, realizing the influence and importance of their decisions on the development of society, constantly raising professional qualifications and competence through lifelong learning, would contribute to the welfare of the state and society.
Learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
Acquire knowledge of basic sciences, human anatomy and physiology, biomechanics and engineering and integrate methods and processes of other scientific disciplines in a multidisciplinary engineering context.
The knowledge of social and psychological problems of the disabled persons as well as the principles and possibilities of adapting the environment to people with disabilities and designing & selecting the technical assistance equipment for the disabled.
Research skills:
The skills related to research planning and accomplishment as well as analysis and interpretation of the obtained data.
The skills of working with engineering equipment.
Engineering analysis:
The capability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
The capability to choose and apply appropriate analytical and modelling methods.
Engineering design:
The capability to design a system, unit or process for pursuing the set object in presence of real economical, environmental, social, political, health & safety, producibility and sustainability restrictions.
The capability to understand design methods and be able to apply them.
Engineering activity skills:
The capability to choose and apply methods of advanced engineering as well as the skills and means required for the professional activities.
The capability to combine their knowledge of theoretical and applied engineering for solving the arising problems, to perceive the influence of engineering solutions in a global, economical, environmental and public context.
Personal and social skills:
The capability to work indivially and in multidisciplinary teams, to communicate effectively, to follow the provisions of the professional ethics and engineering activities, to perceive a responsibility for the engineering activities.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
1. Medical Engineering is in the place where growing and rapidly developing technological and medical sciences come together, it is relevant globally and nationally, therefore the need for highly qualified specialists will not decrease.
2. Study programme of Medical Engineering is interdisciplinary.
Access to professional activity or further study:
Access to professional activity:
After completing the study programme young professionals are much-needed in therapy, sports rehabilitation and medical institutions, enterprises producing medical and rehabilitation equipment, as well as compensatory equipment for disabled people, and foreign representing companies, orthopedic establishments which produce orthopedic orthoses and prostheses. Working as an engineer. Their work – to supervise and deploy sophisticated medical equipment, train employees to use it, remove the faults. Supervising medical and rehabilitation equipment and vehicle manufacturing process, and with organizational skills, will be able to reach management positions.
Access to further study:
Specialists, completed this study programme acquire all the necessary knowledge for further Master studies in Lithuanian and foreign universities.
