Summary of the Profile
Objective(s) of a study programme:
to prepare qualified specialists in Italian philology, having basic research and work skills in Italian studies and Romance languages, developed using the most up-to-date material, able to deepen their knowledge about languages and cultures, literature and history of Italy, and other countries of the Mediterranean, to compare, evaluate and apply results of linguistic, translation and literary theories, and able to interpret cultural phenomena of Italy and other countries of the Mediterranean in a wider European and world contexts.
Learning outcomes:
By graduation, students will be able:
1. to speak and write in Italian and use Spanish and French in certain areas of activities (work, academic, etc);
2. to prepare and translate literary, administrative, commercial, legal, and other texts from Italian to Lithuanian and from Lithuanian to Italian, applying the most important theories and methods of translation;
3. to edit different types of texts (fiction, documents, research papers, articles, etc.) translated from the Romance languages;
4. to apply up-to-date methods for the Italian language teaching and learning;
5. to describe and evaluate the main principles of linguistics, literary, and translation theories, principles of different theoretical approaches and methodological differences, compare them and apply practically;
6. to define and critically analyse features of different trends of Western European literature and tendencies of Italian literature as well as peculiarities of literary works by various authors;
7. to describe and analyse various cultural and social phenomena and historical features of Italy and other countries of the Mediterranean, and to compare them with relative phenomena of the Lithuanian culture;
8. to think coherently, logically and critically, and to study effectively;
9. to apply the acquired skills of scientific and research work and improve professional competences independently.
Activities of teaching and learning:
lectures, seminars, working in groups, case analysis, e-learning, individual work, self-directed learning, project-based learning, etc.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Studies of all the subjects of the programme finish with evaluation of students‘ knowledge and skills on a 10-point grading system. Students‘ achievements are evaluated on the basis of the results of the midterm test, evaluation of other works (homework, individual tasks) and the exam. The final grade is calculated by summing up marks of the midterm test, exam and other works that had been evaluated by giving a mark.

Vytautas Magnus university is unique in Lithuania for its liberal study system and academic freedom which allows students to decide when and what subjects to take. Students are also provided with the opportunity to receive a certificate for a minor field of study together with their main diploma.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
1. Region. This study programme is unique in Lithuania in offering Italian studies and complex studies of Spanish and French cultures.
2. Field of study. Students study Italian philology and three Romanic languages, i.e. Romanic philology.
3. Number of languages. Studies of three Romanic languages are offered.
4. Internationality. A significant part the subjects are taught by Italian, French, and Spanish teachers, students and teachers participate in international mobility and exchange programmes, students are encouraged to have practices abroad.
