General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
Prepare nursing professionals, who, by applying research and practical evidence, would be capable of providing nursing care to healthy or sick individuals in health care institutions of all levels, of providing integral nursing services in social care institutions, as well as assessing the effectiveness of nursing and imparting healthy life style habits to families and society.
Learning outcomes:
Graduates of the programme :
1. Will have knowledge of the framework of their competencies and responsibilities, will be able to apply the provisions of legal acts and professional ethics, and to provide professional information within limits of their competence.
2. Will use integral application of the knowledge of natural science, biomedicine, social science and humanities in decision making related to nursing practice based on the provisions of the national and international health policy.
3. Will be able to apply practices based on nursing research evidence for problem solving in nursing, by analysing, interpreting, summarizing and presenting the research outcomes.
4. Will be able to conduct applied research in nursing in order to solve problems related to nursing practices by applying innovation in nursing.
5. Will be able to evaluate the nursing needs of the patient, family and community by planning the nursing process with great responsibility, as well as by independently making decisions in situations related to nursing situations.
6. Will carefully prepare patients for instrumental testing and medical intervention procedures in compliance with the rules of work safety and hygiene standards.
7. Will be able to identify life-threatening clinical conditions, evaluate them and react to them appropriately, will provide necessary medical care in cases of acute conditions and traumas.
8. Will be able to perform nursing actions and procedures applying the practical knowledge of the science of nursing and taking up responsibility in situations related to their field of expertise.
9. Will develop healthy living habits of patients, families and the community, will organise and implement health education, will give consultations based on individual needs.
10. Will effectively communicate and cooperate with patients, their relatives, with other professionals while solving health issues of individuals seeking to implement patient-centered nursing.
11. Will be able to gather and organize the data on patient care using information technologies and systems used in nursing practice applying the nursing administration principles and standards of professional ethics.
12. Seeking to systematically and critically examine the individual, family or community health will apply the acquired scientific knowledge and will practice life-long learning.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Teaching/learning methods applied in the study process: methods aimed at providing and consolidating information (e.g. lectures, seminars, discussions); practical – operational methods aimed at the engagement in practical activities and forming habits and know-how of the implementation of activities (e.g. work in pairs, internships, lab activities, practical classes, data gathering on sight, use of models, medical, nursing and obstetric instruments and equipment); problem-solving methods aimed at stimulating critical thinking and teaching problem solving, enabling students to apply theoretical information in tackling real-life nursing and obstetric conditions (e.g. analysis of clinical condition, imitation of real-life situations, research/project implementation), etc.
Methods of assessment of learning
achievements:
Cumulative evaluation and a 10-grade evaluation system are used. In cumulative assessment the study outcomes are comprised of intermediate evaluations. The programmes of study subjects contain concrete structural elements used in evaluating study outcomes, their weight in the final evaluation, content, criteria and requirements of concrete tasks to be evaluated. Each subject is completed by an exam and student‘s independent work (project) that are evaluated. The final grade is comprised of the composite parts (e.g. intermediate evaluations, independent work, exam) of the cumulative evaluation that are indicated in the programme of the subject, the percentage of which is determined in the programme of the study subject.

The following study subjects are studied in this field: Medical First Aid; Professional Ethics and Law; Anatomy; Physiology; Microbiology, Virology, Immunology; General Psychology; Pharmacology; Biophysics, Biochemistry ir Radiology; Applied Nursing Research; Management and Administration of Nursing; Geriatric Nursing; Geriatric Nursing Internship; Clinical Nursing; Pediatric Nursing; Pediatric Nursing Internship; Community Nursing; Community Nursing Internship; Obstetric Nursing; Obstetric Nursing Internship; Surgical Nursing; Surgical Nursing Internship; Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation; Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Internship; Mental Health Nursing; Mental Health Nursing Internship; Intensive Care Nursing and Internship, etc.
Fourteen credits have to be mandatory from the following selected alternative study subjects in this group of subjects in this study field: Home Nursing Care/ Nursing in Social Care Institutions; Palliative Nursing Care/Oncology Nursing; Integral Care/ Disability Nursing. Internships account for 86 credits (2300 academic hours), elective studies account for 9 credits, the qualification exam and final thesis account for 13 credits.

Students will be able to choose study subjects from 6 alternatives offered to deepen their knowledge of the study field which will account for the total of 14 credits. Students will have a possibility to choose from such study subjects belonging to the study field as Home Nursing Care/ Nursing in Social Care Institutions; Palliative Nursing Care/ Oncology Nursing; Integral Care/ Disability Nursing.

The knowledge received, as well as subject and general competencies acquired enable the graduates to integrate into the labour market, to work in hospitals, polyclinics, primary healthcare centres, private healthcare centres.
Access to further study:
After graduation the first cycle college students will be able to continue their studies in the study programmes of the second study cycle of the Health Sciences study field in Lithuanian and foreign higher education institutions.
