Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To train an Oral Hygiene specialist capable of assisting odontologists and dental hygienists of various specializations to perform odontological treatment procedures, and independently ensure infection control, oral care and prevention in dental care licensed institutions that provide oral health services.
Learning outcomes:
1.Knowledge and its application. A graduate: knows the legal acts regulating the activities of the Oral Hygiene specialist, normative documents regulating the workplace, environment and safe work, national and international health care policy, professional ethics principles, is able to analyze and apply them in practice; integrates the knowledge of biomedical sciences, forming the understanding of human growth, development and health, in the professional activities of the odontologist’ assistant.
2. Ability to conduct research. A graduate is able to perform applied research to solve problems of professional activity, following ethical principles of research and ensuring the quality of evidence-based practice.
3. Social abilities. A graduate: is able to communicate and cooperate in a team by providing dental aid and care; is able to communicate both in Lithuanian and foreign language in a professional environment.
4. Personal abilities. A graduate: is able to solve problems independently, make decisions, evaluate their impact and act in a defined situation using practical knowledge, adapst to new situations; is able to collect and organise information, use modern technology and information systems in odontologist’ assistant practice, properly treat confidential information;
5. Special abilities. A graduate:
is able to ensure infection control by adhering to requirements of normative documents;
is able to assist odontologists of various specialisations, oral hygienists working with dental equipment, devices, instruments and materials;
is able to identify oral and dental diseases for patient groups; teaches patients oral prophylaxis;
is able to complete professional documentation by selecting patient’s life and health’s anamnesis, ensuring the organizational processes of the institution providing dental care;
is able to work with dental x-ray equipment
is able to identify life threatening conditions and to react properly, is able to provide necessary medical aid.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Teaching and studying activities designed to develop students' ability to collaborate in a team, independently solve problems and adapt to new situations are focused on the student: to convey information – lectures, discussions, seminars, consultations; to develop special professional skills - practical workshops using dummies and simulations, clinical work while performing procedures; for critical and creative thinking – case studies, interactive methods, applied research, to develop self-reliance – searching for target literature, reviewing teaching material, development of presentations, etc.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
A ten-point criterion assessment scale and a cumulative assessment system is used consisting of interim assessments. Following assessment methods are used: written (test, concept map, case study, project, practical work report, exam), and oral (colloquium, demonstration of skills, public presentation, defense of practice report, etc.). Practical skills are assessed by demonstrating them in a clinical setting.

Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Introduction to Clinical Odontology, Infection Control in Odontology, Prevention of Dental Diseases and Health Promotion, Internal Diseases, Nursing Basics and First Medical Aid, Diseases of Dental Solid Tissues and Periodontium, Basics of Assistance, Pharmacology and Pain Control in Dentistry, Dental Radiology, Ortodontia and Orthopedic Dentistry, Oral Mucosal Diseases and Oral Surgery, Methodology of Applied Research, Administration of Dental Care Institutions, Communication Psychology and Professional Ethics, etc.
Duration of mandatory practices is 26 weeks: Cognitive; Infection Control in Dentistry; Assisting a Doctor Odontological Practice; Assisting a Doctor Odontologist Specialist, Pre-Graduation Practice
Specialisations:

Optional courses:
Students can choose to study the desired foreign language (English, German, Russian), and choose the practice for deepening the field: Adult Oral Care Practice / Pediatric Oral Care Practice; subjects: Aesthetic Dentistry / Photography in Dentistry; Dental Care of Geriatric Patients / Dental Care of Patients with Special Needs.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
Study outcomes are aimed at interdisciplinary integration, linking its content with similar subjects and practices aimed to deepen skills of odontologist's assistant.

Access to professional activity:
The graduate will be able to work in all levels of healthcare institutions that have odontologic care (help) licenses and other institutions that aim to ensure provision of oral healthcare.
Access to further study:
Studies can be continued in Lithuanian and foreign higher education institutions in the study field group programmes of the health sciences.
It is also possible to seek the crediting of the study results in order to study in first cycle study university programmes. After completing additional studies or fulfilling other requirements set by the higher education institution, graduates have the right to enroll in post-graduate studies.
