Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The aim of the Programme is to train qualified specialists who have knowledge and understanding of the past (people and their heritage, including cultural and biological aspects in a complex way) in the perspective of archaeological science, as well as have competences to carry out an investigation according to the requirements set by archaeological science taking into consideration ethic and professional, historical and social, theoretical and methodological contexts and who are able to act in a dynamic professional environment.
Learning outcomes:
the student knows and understands the general development of archaeological science and understands a specific area of archaeological scientific research in detail;
the student knows methods of archaeological field research and is able to apply them in practice;
the student knows interpretational approaches of different archaeological fields, understands the results of different investigation fields and is able to explain them;
the student understands problems of archaeological cultural heritage conservation, the role of archaeological science in modern society, the spheres of public responsibility of an archaeologist;
the student knows and understands biology of a human being and animals – biological evolution, ontogenesis, biological diversity, their biological and cultural aspects; has knowledge of research possibilities into individual life course of humans and animals, understands modelling of the populations and communities of the past and their theoretical reconstructions;
the student is able to carry out a simple scientific research independently (to define the objectives and the tasks, to apply adequate research methods, to collect data, to apply main interpretative theories, to formulate reasoned conclusions);
the student is able to understand different archaeological research methods, the results of the investigations carried out earlier, is able to assess their reliability;
the student is able to use different information search tools, as well as bibliographical sources, archives, museum stocks;
the student is able to present information in a reasoned way orally and in writing to different target groups on the issues of archaeological field research (state institutions, public organisations, etc.);
the student is able to understand values of the archaeological heritage, to present them to the public and interested state institutions, to contribute to cherishing the archaeological heritage;
the student is able to independently carry out tasks of the working activity, to make decisions, to creatively solve problems that arise in his/her working activity;
the student is able to organise and plan, to adapt himself/herself to the environmental changes.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Teacher guided/Student centered learning approach. Lectures, seminars, excursions, projects, presentations, reading and commenting archaeological sources and historiographical texts autonomously, discussions, practical exercises, practice, problem based study.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Examinations (written and oral); colloquiums; tests; assessment of report and presentations; written papers: Module paper, Review, Bibliographic list, Practice report, Course paper, Bachelor final thesis; exercise course; project; practice.

Lectures, seminars/pro-seminars, practical training, cognitive trips, archaeological field practices, tutorials, self-study.
Archaeology programme is organized in modular system. The module integrates several closely related themes, presents different research and study methods. There are two types of modules: obligatory and optional. Main study field has 165 credits, one module – 15 credits.
The programme starts with four modules: Introduction to Studies; Introduction to Lithuanian Archaeology, Archaeological Field Research Methods and Basics of Documentation; Introduction to Cultural Heritage Conservation. These four modules (60 credits in total) can be also chosen by the students from other study programmes as Minor studies in Archaeology.
15 credits go to the modules of General university education.
Bachelor programme in Archaeology combines theoretical studies and practical training. Several modules of Archaeology programme have obligatory practice: Archaeological Field Research Methods and Basics of Documentation; Introduction to Cultural Heritage Conservation; Iron Age and Early Metal Period Archaeology; Archaeology of Iron Age (I millenium); Historical Archaeology; Practical Research Bachelor Seminar.
Specialisations:
Bioarchaeology
Optional courses:
60 credits are devoted to a deeper specialisation when continuing archaeology studies, or to the specialisation in Bioarchaeology in the same study field or to the minor study programme offered by VU or the Faculty of History or to the study modules of general university education.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
There is possibility to acquire double degree.
Bachelor programme in Archaeology is unique in the context of Lithuania.
Access to professional activity or further study:
Access to professional activity:
Positions in archaeology sphere, in museums, in archives and in the field of cultural heritage, journalism, positions that requires Bachelor level education in the public/private administration.
Access to further study:
Access to Master programmes at the Faculty of History: History, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Conservation, as well as access to other Second cycle studies in the Humanities or Social sciences.
