Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
The aim of the Bioengineering study program is to prepare a Bachelor of Bioengineering possessing the fundamental knowledge in the fields of microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology, gene and biochemical engineering, the modelling of the biological systems, and capable to use the theoretical knowledge when solving the practical problems.

Learning outcomes:
-Students know and understand systematically the essential definitions and theoretical and practical grounds of Biotechnology.
-Students have tightly connected knowledge in related to Biotechnology disciplines (molecular biology, gene engineering, bioinformatics etc.).
-Students are capable to use their knowledge to formulate and solve the biotechnological problems.
-Students are able to use their knowledge to analyze the biological processes and are able to select right methods and equipment.
-Students are able to plan and perform the experiments, evaluate the data and make correct decisions.
-Students have skills of work using the equipment designed for Biotechnology.
-Students are capable to combine the theoretical and practical knowledge when solving biotechnological problems.
-Students understand ethical, environmental, and commercial context of the technological activities.
-Students are capable to work efficiently on their own and in team.
-Students are able to communicate with the community of the Engineering and Technologies as well as general public.
-Students understand the importance of the individual lifetime studies and prepare themselves for it.

Activities of teaching and learning:
Lectures are given by the qualified teachers with the theorethical and practical knowledge in biotechnologies and the related fields.
The final work is oriented to the independent work based on the problem solving. It is done by student under the supervision of the teacher. Laboratory practicals are done using the laboratory equipment thereby developing the hands-on skills.
Classroom practicals are done under supervision of the teacher and making the reports to him. Traineeships are performed at the companies, public institutions and research institutes that perform the activities conected to the study field.

Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Written exams, interim examination, lab reports, colloquia, writing short papers on chosen subject and oral presentation
Framework:
Prospective Bachelors of Bioengineering study general subjects such as mathematics, physics, information technology, analytical chemistry, biology, management, general chemistry; special subjects include the organic chemistry, chemical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, chemistry of natural compounds, principles of biochemistry, principles of microbiology, basics of genetic engineering, biochemical methods, chromatography, microbiological technology, bioetics, biodata mining, immunology etc.
Practical training takes place in two stages: in laboratories and computer labs of the University or academic institutions, and also scientific and practical training at the companies or academic institutions. Period of practical training is 12 credits. As a result, the skills of students to perform the practical experiments and use the laboratory equipment are developed and consolidated.
