Summary of the Profile

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
To train Bachelors in Lithuanian Philology with good foreign (Latvian, Estonian, Modern Greek, Turkish) language skills and thorough knowledge of the culture, traditions, political and economic life of the foreign country: to introduce students to the main disciplines of Lithuanian Philology, history of language and script, main stages in the development of Lithuanian literature (from ancient times to the 21st century), contemporary issues in language and literature; to provide general philological knowledge, to develop the ability to independently analyse forms of linguistic and literary expression; to teach a new foreign language, to introduce culture, traditions, political and economic context of the foreign country; to teach the basics of translation and develop interpreting/translation skills; to develop students‘ independence, critical thinking and openness to other cultures.

Learning outcomes:
A graduate in Lithuanian Philology and a Foreign Language (Latvian, Estonian, Modern Greek, Turkish) is able to communicate in different communicative situations, can compare, analyse and summarise various linguistic and cultural phenomena of the native and the foreign language, get insights into the similarities and interaction of Indo-European languages, carry out independent philological research, write professional and scholarly conclusions, apply in professional activity and develop interpreting/translation skills.

Activities of teaching and learning:
The curriculum includes lectures, seminars, practical classes, internship and professional placement, as well as independent work. Apart from classical lectures, active learning methods are used, including interactive lectures, problem-solving, etc. Seminars and practical classes are given to small groups (about 16 students) using student-oriented methods such as brainstorming, group discussions, presentations and reading (individual and in pairs). A lot of attention is devoted to independent studies: essay and term paper writing, using IT, feedback and peer-review. Students have internship at the university and professional placement outside the university (in translation bureaus, publishing houses, editorial offices, schools, etc.). A report is submitted at the end of the work placement period. The preparation of the final thesis includes empirical linguistic or literary research.

Framework:
The degree programme, apart from the basics of the general philological education (obligatory and optional courses, 50 credits), of general University education courses (15 cr.), consists of courses directly related to the main study programme (Lithuanian philology; 70 cr.) and courses of the foreign language and culture study block (70 cr.). Studies include linguistics, language communication (understanding, writing and translating texts), literature and culture. The ability to carry out linguistic/literary research is developed by writing and defending the BA thesis (20 credits in total). The independent practice and work placement (15 credits in total) is available as the following options: translation, research-related practice (corpus linguistics), language teaching etc.

Optional courses:
Optional courses (35 credits) are on lingusitic and/or cultural and literary issues.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
The strengths of the degree programme are the all-round studies in Lithuanian philology that cover the Lithuanian language, linguistics, literature and culture at different levels (from theoretical knowledge to its application in practical situations, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) as well as research integration which ensures a solid education. Another distinctive feature includes the fact that the programme aims to attract motivated candidates who know exactly before enrolment what foreign language as a minor study field they are going to choose. Another foreign language and culture skills may enhance the employment chances.

Access to professional activity:
A graduate can work as an interpreter/ translator, personal assistant, editor in the areas of culture, education, mass media, book publishing where good knowledge of Lithuanian philology and foreign language skills are required.

Access to further study:
After completing the study programme in Lithuanian Philology and a Foreign Language (Latvian, Estonian, Modern Greek, Turkish) Bachelors of Humanities in Philology may enroll in MA studies: Linguistics, Literature, Interpreting/Translation or Educology, and obtain a Master‘s degree and a respective professional qualification.
