Summary of the Profile of study programme

General Description:
Objective(s) of a study programme:
to educate a beauty therapist having a holistic approach towards human health and being able to apply modern cosmetology tools and equipment when providing high quality and safe cosmetology services; work independently as well as in a team in cooperation with wellness and health promotion specialists; organize the business of providing cosmetology services; and seek continuous personal and professional development.
Learning outcomes:
Graduates will be able to:
1. Knowledge of the structure of a human body, its physiology, pathological changes, potential health hazards and being able to apply it while solving professional issues as well as establishing the need for consultations of health promotion and wellness specialists.
2. Knowledge about the composition of cosmetic products, operation of cosmetic equipment as well as their purpose and effect and being able to apply them in professional activities.
3. Being able collect and analyze data for solving professional issues, assessing performance, quality assurance and implementation of innovations as well as organization of the business of providing cosmetic services.
4. Being able to find out and assess the client's aesthetic needs, purposefully select assessment methods and equipment, taking into account the physiological and pathological changes, data of cosmetic anamnesis.
5. Ability to design a long-term and short-term cosmetic treatment plan, choose cosmetics, cosmetology equipment and consult the client.
6. Ability to perform cosmetic treatment in cosmetology centers, beauty parlors and non-specialized areas, ensuring safety in accordance with the requirements of the Hygiene Norms and in cooperation with health promotion and wellness specialists.
7. Being able to plan and organize consultations in the professional field as well as the business of providing cosmetic services.
8. Being able to communicate with customers of different age, gender, social backgrounds and special needs in accordance with ethical and civil principles.
9. Being able to educate professionals and non-professionals at national and international levels by disseminating the knowledge of cosmetology.
10. Being able to foster human values, realize the importance of lifelong learning approach and apply them creatively in professional activities.
Activities of teaching and learning:
During studies various teaching and learning methods are applied: lectures, seminars, practical work, laboratory work, practice in real work placements, situation analysis, group learning, project, preparation and presentation of autonomously written assignments, discussions, workshops.
Students are offered the following forms of self-study: independent study of theoretical topics, preparation for colloquiums, written tests, course papers and projects, term paper, laboratory works, writing surveys and reports, professional practice performance reports, preparation for seminars and presentations, description, solving and presentation of clinical situations in real work places.
Methods of assessing learning outcomes:
A cumulative assessment system is used for evaluation of learning outcomes. General assessment of the study course learning outcomes is determined with regard to the evaluation strategy, set in the programme of a particular subject. The learning outcomes are assessed using a system of scoring. A 10 score assessment system is applied in evaluation of students’ achievements. Different assessment methods are used for evaluation of the learning outcomes achieved and the competence acquired.

Subjects of general collegial studies –15 credits:
Informational Technologies, Foreign Language: English, German, French, Applied research methodology, Basics of Psychology, Introduction into studies and Basics of Law.
Subjects of the study field comprise 135 credits:
Anatomy, physiology, pathology, Environment and health. Microbiology, Cytology and genetic, Cosmetic chemistry and material science, Body massages and procedures, General cosmetology and cosmetic diagnostics, Manicure and pedicure, Clinical fundamentals in Cosmetology and first aid, Cosmetics and technology, Ergonomics and human safety, Woman’s health. Skin diseases, Methodology of cosmetic procedures, Professional ethics, Biophysics, Pharmacology, Devices and equipment in cosmetology, Clinical cosmetology and cosmetic surgery, Basic of sales management and customer service, Business economics and basics of advertising.
Practices of professional activities, performed during studies, comprise 30 credits: Professional Internship of body massages and hands, feet care; Professional Internship of consulting on cosmetic products (Pharmacies, Cosmetics shops); Professional Internship of cosmetic services to customers I; Professional Internship of cosmetic services to customers II; Final Professional Internship.
Professional Internships are organized in the practical training room of the Department of Cosmetology, where students not do cosmetologytreatments, but also perform administrative and managerial functions, as well as in various beauty clinics, health centers, spas, cosmetology rooms, etc. Students have an opportunity to do internships in different countries of the European Union under the Erasmus exchange program, mostly students go to Greece, Malta, Cyprus and other countries.

Elective subjects – 30 credits, comprising courses of Deeper Studies of the Same Study Field: Decorative cosmetics, SPA technologies in cosmetology, Drawing and colouristics, Aromatherapy, Basic of fregnances and perfumes, Mobile cosmetological services, Ayurveda cosmetology. Students may also choose subjects from the List of Freely Elective Courses offered by Kauno kolegija.
Distinctive features of a study programme:
Cosmetology curriculum is constantly updated assessment of the labor market changes and new tschnology. Basic study subjects are integrated with special subjects applying knowledge and science-based practice. Study subjects: Aethetic Surgery, Ergonomics, Biophysics, Cosmetic Appliances and Technology, Clinic Cosmetology, Cosmetic tools and Equipments, Customer Service and Management Cosmetic Surgery and other that are relevant in nowadays cosmetology.
Subject block of Cosmetic Chemistry and Material Science, Cosmetic Appliances and Technology, Basics of Fragrance and Perfume provide the students with the knowledge not only about the ingredients but also practical skills about manufacturing of cosmetic products and technical documentation. The graduates will be able to work in companies manufacturing cosmetic products.
Students work with materials and tools of well-known foreign companies during practical classes
(Maria Galland, Academie, Bioline, Mezoderma, Make up forever etc..), the latest cosmetological mechanical techniques (skin diagnostic apparatus with microcameras, microcurrent therapy, vacuum body massage, ultrasound, photothermolysis (IPL), microdermabrasion, electroporation (non-invasive mesotherapy), etc.).
Students are integrated into the research activities of the department by conducting commissioned research. Students and graduates have the opportunity to continuously improve their professional skills in the presence of skills competitions in Lithuania and abroad. Students participate in a variety of projects.

Access to professional activity:
Graduates are usually employed in cosmetic surgeries, wellness and spa centers, beauty clinics, cosmetics-trading firms, etc., they are engaged in individual activities, developing their own business. According specialty employs about 75% of the graduates, some of them working in their profession abroad.
Access to further study:
Graduates of cosmetology program can continue their studies and qualifications at VDU, University of Klaipėda and foreign educational institutions in accordance with the procedures laid down by those higher schools: in Finland, in Poland and in other countries where bachelor and master studies of Cosmetology studies programs are realized.
The college has organized courses and seminars for graduates to deepen the professional knowledge, introduces new technologies .
