Summary of the Profile of study programme
General Description Aim of the study programme The study programme of Business English aims to train socially responsible, critically thinking and creative translation specialists who are able to communicate correctly in Business English in writing and orally, independently and (or) in cooperation with other representatives in the field compose business texts in Lithuanian and English and translate and edit them using modern information technologies and specialised software. Learning outcomes: 1. Understands contemporary concepts of translation science, knows theories and kinds of translation, recognises problematic translation phenomena and proposes solutions; 2. Identifies and is able to explain the grammatical, stylistic, and genre features of Lithuanian and English texts, cultural and professional contexts; 3. Knows computer-assisted translation tools and term search systems and uses them while translating; 4. Comprehends language as a system and correctly uses written and spoken Business English at C1 level and a second foreign language at A2-B1 level; 5. Finds translation solutions considering linguistic peculiarities of the Lithuanian and English languages and selecting an appropriate translation strategy; 6. Able to produce and submit a translated text using modern technologies and specialised software and manage translation projects; 7. Able to identify, analyse, and creatively and constructively solve problems in the professional field by applying the knowledge acquired; 8. Able to collect, analyse, and systematise materials from various sources using various
information technologies and bibliographic resources; describe, present, and defend the research results; 9. Communicates and cooperates with the representatives of the professional field while solving specific problems and presenting the results of their work; 10. Works constructively as part of a team and is responsible for the quality of the service; 11. Communicates and cooperates with Lithuanian and foreign partners in intercultural situations following the principles of professional ethics and sustainable society; 12. Carries out professional activities in a socially responsible and independent manner striving for continuous professional and personal development. Activities of teaching and learning Innovative teaching and learning methods are applied, and the study process is virtualised. Student-oriented self-study is based on tasks and group activities that encourage problematic and critical thinking. Educational environment is created to enable students to self-control their study process, reflect on their activities and encourage creativity and innovation. The programme strives for students’ active participation in the study process. During lectures, attempts are made to create an environment for discussions; and a dialogue between the teacher and the student is encouraged. Methods of assessing learning achievements A ten score cumulative assessment system for assessing knowledge and skills is used. During a semester, learning outcomes are assessed during interim accountings (translations, tests, individual and group tasks and their presentations, projects, presentations of practical and self-study tasks, etc.). The final score consists of interim and examination evaluation scores. Framework
Study subjects (modules), practical training: Courses of general collegial studies (15 ECTS): Social Psychology, Sustainable Development, Basics of Economics and Management, Professional Lithuanian. Courses of the study field (137 ECTS): · Courses (98 ECTS): English Phonetics, English Grammar, English for Social Communication, English for Career and Employment, English for Business Administration, English for Management, English for Marketing, English for Economics, English Lexicology and Stylistics, Basics of Linguistics, Philosophy of Language, Basics of the Science of Translation, Computer Assisted Translation Tools, Methodology of Applied Research, Research Paper, Translation, Translation and Summarising of Texts, Consecutive Interpretation, Text Editing, Translation Project Management; · Internships (30 ECTS): Internship of Information Management, Internship of Information Management and Translation, Final Professional Internship · Professional Bachelor Thesis (9 ECTS). Elective courses (28 ECTS): 2nd Foreign Language, Information Management Technologies, Business Ethics and Law, Freely Elective Subjects. Specialisations: Freely elective courses: Students have a right to choose elective courses from the list offered by Kauno kolegija. Students can choose the 2nd foreign language from the list offered by the Language Centre of the Faculty of Arts and Education of Kauno kolegija (16 languages). During the internships students develop their translation skills in Lithuanian and foreign translation offices and business enterprises of various types. Access to professional activity or further study: Access to professional activity: Graduates can work in business enterprises, various institutions, and develop their own business. Access to further study: Access to the second cycle studies upon meeting the requirements set by the accepting higher education institution.
